    Hi,

Is anybody else having trouble connecting to this forum via the "Forums" app? It started yesterday morning (12/22/17), and just says "can't connect to server". Obviously I can connect this way, Firefox on Linux through my WiFi router and Comcast, so I tried putting my phone (Pre 3) in airplane mode, then WiFi only through the same router, but same problem. Then just for fun I deleted and re-installed the app, but no luck. Everything else on the phone seems to connect just fine, the only problem is connecting to this forum through the "Forums" app.

    Any ideas?

I'll check it out. I haven't used it in a few days, so I haven't noticed. I did notice a day or two ago that my bookmarks in Tapatalk all changed for the other Mobile Nations forums, which hints at a change. I don't want to start a panic, but my fear is that they've updated the plug-in and Forums is no longer compatible with it. I have already experienced no longer being able to connect to another forum I regularly read. The reason this is worrisome is that their API documents are no longer public, so it will be difficult to update the app to be compatible with the latest Tapatalk plugins.

Sad to say, but I think this is what is happening.. I can't connect to any of the Mobile Nations forums. Someone here, probably Herrie, sent me a captured API call from Android for their forum gallery, maybe they can help figure out what the new API looks like. It's not a good outlook though. Reverse engineering is not foolproof. Or easy, especially when a company closes a previously open API. They did this to the gallery API years ago, and the original app developer had to fix it several times before they stopped responding and removed all public API documents for that API.

Posting this from Forums. It seems that it might be the same problem that hit the Bold 9900 version of Tapatalk a few years ago.

I deleted the forum and re-added it as https://forums.webosnation.com

You need the https:// in the address. You'll probably have to do this with all of the Mobile Nations forums.

Alternatively, they may have just started to work again. I can't tell. CrackBerry and Android Central seem to be working for me, and I can't remember how I entered those addresses.

Edit: well, it turns out I needed the https:// to stay logged in on Android Central.

Edit 2: I tried to add a regular webOS Nation (no https) forum as well, and that one doesn't work. The https one does.

Oh, that's brilliant! I can't believe I didn't try that. I've had that happen before, but it was a long time ago. That time it gave an error that helped me figure it out, but this time, either I was just too dumb, or it gave a different error message.

Yes, I think you did forget :P

Didn't we have to use this trick to login to thinkpads.com?

Could be that one... Honestly it has probably happened more than once. Feeling old!

Yep, that did it ... thanks a lot you guys.

I also just noticed I'm having a weird issue with quotes right here, it was a bit of a struggle to quote this one ... is somebody tinkering with the forum in general?

Thanks for the fix! This had me puzzled for a couple days, and I don't think https would have occurred to me.

I can't get any logging from Communities on the touchpad, so I need to get the emulator going on my laptop again.. or maybe I'll just not up the old one and do it there. It will import the forum list exported from Forums, but still won't connect. I'm suspicious it's changing the URL, but can't be sure without debugging first.

I updated the noWindow.js to have https and port 443 instead of http and port 80. I deleted the account kind (com.newness.communities.accounts:1) and after installing the new IPK things seem OK.

Ah, THAT'S where I put the bundled forums! I couldn't remember. Thanks Herrie, I had a feeling you would jump in and help. I looked the code that opens the forum, and found that it only rebuilds the URL if the normalizedUrl attribute is not set in the json file you import. The Forums app export sets it in an attribute named forum_url.. If you rename that to normalizedUrl (exactly), it will import and open successfully.

One other important thing: I added the code to encrypt the passwords to Forums well after I patched Communities to import forums, so you'll have to update your login info on all imported forums and set your password correctly so you can log in. I'd make sure and do that before trying to open the forum, so doesn't start trying to log in with the encrypted password, which will fail, and could lock your account if it tries too many times.
