After coming across a site that demanded I enable Javascript, I realised I couldn't find any way of doing so.

Resorting to Google, I found lots of posts asking, 'How do I enable Javascript in WM 6.1' but I failed to find a single answer.

    Is there an answer?

Opera Mobile 9.5 beta has JavaScript but in my opinion (not shared by many others) it is balls.
Give Opera Mini a try. It won't cost you anything although you should update the Java engine to avoid a crashing bug.

you're probably trying to access a page that uses ajax or activex perhaps and getting a "false positive" about javascript being disabled when really that's not the issue (lack of support for ajax is)
