My Palm Pre Plus was working fine until I did a full erase so that my boy could start fresh with it. It had been off the Verizon network for several years, and I thought it would be a good phone for him. I added the phone to my verizon account and activated it, but now I'm stuck on the palm profile screen. I tried adding a new profile, tried accessing my old profile, and I continue to get the message that I need to be connected to the mobile carrier network, try again when you have coverage. I reset the phone again, I tried entering ##DEVMODE# but that took me right back to the palm profile screen, not a developer mode screen. I spent hours on the phone with Verizon and they finally gave up. I have tried every solution I can find to bypass the palm profile screen, but all the links to external files I have found for bypass tools no longer work.

Basically at the moment, my phone is a brick. Can anyone help me through the process?

It seems that your Pre Plus is running webOS 1.x since it doesn't accept the ##DEVMODE# trick. so you need the devicetool

Believe it or not, it is still available from HP/Palm ( http://cdn.downloads.palm.com/sdkdow...devicetool.jar ), but you would need to download it from a computer that has had its HOSTS file modified to point to the right IP addresses (http://forums.webosnation.com/webos-...ml#post3441919).

Luckily the kind folks here and at PivotCE have made one available here:
    https://pivotce.com/2015/12/13/the-u...ool/#more-3380
    - That should do the trick.

It seems you know that you need to bypass activation, but here is some background:
    https://pivotce.com/2015/04/16/over-and-out/
    https://pivotce.com/2015/06/24/tip-h...ss-activation/

The tool linked in the post above is probably the quickest method for non- 2.x devices.

It then becomes a question of the effort you wish to make to get the services updated and running. You can read this: https://pivotce.com/2014/10/21/guide...n-2014-part-1/ (which needs some more updating)

In discussing Google services, this article also mentions the OpenSSL update which will enable the phone to handle SHA256 certificates: https://pivotce.com/2016/07/07/guide...oogle-synergy/

Assuming your phone is still on webOS 1.4.5, the fixes will be limited, but you can use it as a phone. If you or your son are willing to try, it should be possible to upgrade your Pre plus to webOS 2.2.4 - which has more fixes available.
WebOS 2 Upgrade - WebOS Internals

Preware still works and a number of apps are available - listings here: https://preware.pivotce.com and http://www.webosnation.com/apps

I think Facebook can be accessed via the browser, but whatsapp is long gone - seems to be what most complain about.

See the links below for more info. The service pack and backup tips especially.

If webOS still interests you, take a look at LuneOS, the development of Open webOS: https://pivotce.com/2016/08/09/luneo...se-cafe-touba/

    Cant bypass the activation...

    Can you be more specific?

If it is Brand new in box, then I think it's likely to be running webOS 1.4.5, so you need the device tool method. Please specify where / when the failure occurs.

    It is webOS 1.4.1
    IMG_20171218_200428.jpg
the two attaches screens i could get after entering
    #*43574357#
then i could read a few info screen and give a name to the phone - thats all.

The devmode codes did not work. i did not find any option to activate an "USB Mode" or anything like this - so how should i make a connection to my (WinXP) PC to install anything or to deactivate / bypass the activation process ?

I only want to use it as "normal cellphone", perhaps later to switch to webOS 2.x or try to copy my Palm Desktop Memos from my clie to it - thats not urgent in this moment...

Read the recovery mode section: https://web.archive.org/web/20150323...ed_device.html

    Also: https://www.webosnation.com/bypass-activation-webos-1-x

You can simply run the tool to bypass or you could try the 1.4.5 doctor that's appropriate for your device (ROW). After doctoring, you will still need to bypass...

The links posted above are still useful.

Note that recovery mode, developer mode & USB mode are all different things.
Developer mode: Allows access to the underlying system for command line access, sideloading, patching and general tinkering via a connected computer.
USB mode: Is when you plug the device into a computer and it offers to act as a USB drive, so you can transfer files to the storage partition.

Finally, there is an item of software that can transfer your Palm data to a webOS device. I'll see if I can find a link...

It's not impossible. The instructions for your device are in the first link in the previous post. It's the archive.org copy of the Palm instructions. Follow these steps to get your Pre+ into recovery mode:

Plug the USB cable into your computer. Do not connect the other end to your device yet.

Remove the battery from the device.

Hold down the device's volume up button.

Insert the USB cable into the device.

    Re-insert the battery.

    Release the volume up button.

The device will boot into recovery mode, and you will see the USB logo on the device's screen. At this point, you may run either the webOS Doctor (to flash your device with the latest version of webOS) or the activation-bypass tool (to enable your unactivated device for development).
