Sometimes it will turn sideways or upside down and it is a chore to get it back to the normal vertical position. Is there a trick to this?

I had a lot of trouble with this too at first. Here's what works for me. If you're holding the phone vertically (portrait-style to type on the keyboard for example) and the screen is showing an incorrect horizontal orientation, tilt the entire phone towards your body so that the phone does a type of bow. When you bring the phone back to normal postion, the screen should have properly oriented itself. This also works for the opposite scenario. Just tilt the phone to correct it. I've done it enough now so that I don't need to do the full bow, but just a slight tilt of the phone forward and it fixes it every time. I hope it works for you.
