My phone keeps switching from Ev to 1x and I'm not sure why. Yesterday it stayed in 1x for most of the day. Then today it started doing it again. I was wondering if anyone knew why this was happening.

Alot of that could have something to do with your reception in your area. Once it drops so low, the signal changes to 1x instead of EV.
This happens because your phone is having issues holding on to the EVDO signal. As the EVDO signal drops/becomes weak/nonexistent it looks for the next best thing and that's x1. This is completely normal.
Check the coverage map....what kind of coverage area are you in?
My guess is that if this has happened since purchase, it is the cell towers. It could also be the cell towers having issues in your area, which you should report ASAp to the carrier.
It could also be your phone, and a restart/reset might be in order.
some times i lost both of the signals for about 5 seconds and return and then come out a message to contact sprint but that happen when im in the bassement of my house!
its a sprint problem not pre. What you could do is type in ##evdo# on ur phone app. There you can pick ur signal strength.
I entered that in...there are a number of ones to choose from, and I'm not very knowledgeable in that area. The choices I have are 1xRTT only, EVDO Rev 0 only, Hybrid Rev 0, EVDO only, and Hybrid Rev A
1xRTT is slow data, voice.
EVDO ONLY modes = DATA only. The voice radio (1x) is off. All inbound calls, txts, etc go to voicemail.
Hybrid modes, allow both voice and data inbound and outbound, with inbound/outbound voice stopping the data channel radio.
Rev 0 is for compatibility with Sprint's older towers that haven't had the Rev A upgrade.
1X will get you the absolute best Battery, but slow data.
Hybrid gives you the "best" of voice/fast data, but will eat battery faster since you're maintaining both radios.
I'm gonna go ahead and blame my Pre on this one, mainly because my work Blackberry(A Sprint 9630) never loses its EV-DO signal in my area, but my Pre will randomly switch around like no other. But, disclaimer, just my area, which is known for its good Sprint reception, so it could definitely be your cell towers as well. But, in my case, its totally the Pre.
i've stated my conspiracy theories here before and was shouted down as a nut job. this only happens to me when i'm using bandwidth; sprintv or pandora, etc. without changing my position, it'll go from evdo to 1x. it's sprint (in conjunction with the Rand Corp and the reverse vampires) knocking you off the better network to save bandwidth.

What do you mean by you type that in to your Phone app? type that in like your where u would dial a number to make a call? or type it into the quick launch?
