I am not saying it is certain, but a plausible way to look at this is a product that was originally intended to come out one or two quarters later than the current target. If you take a hypothetical of Palm thinking in late fall or early winter 08 that they would bring it to market in fall of 09, several things we are seeing, with a late spring release, Hesse's mentions of supply concerns, and Palm insiders mentioning component availability issues, make more sense.
We know that Palm needed a cash infusion to keep going and one was had in Dec 22. A couple of weeks later a relatively out of the blue unveiling at CES. Palm needed/needs four things: the OS, the hardware, a carrier that won't see it just as a member of its stable but as something to really push, and cash from from the capital markets. If the OS was moving along ok, and the cash helped them accelerate, and Sprint committed, then they would be able to push and accelerate or solve the three of the four issues. Production is more complicated because it is not in their hands. Even compal doesn't make screens itself but is dependent on Cypress' projected capacitance.
It is a plausible theory that this was planned for one or two quarters later and needs pushed it up to late the current deadline for survival. Not saying it is the case but I can't think of anything that points away and several things point to it.
