Well for one thing, beauty is till in the eye of the beholder. Secondly, and I am basing this on personal experience, most consumers want a phone that looks cool, and the actual functions of the phone besides being able to make phone calls and text messages, seem secondary. I have seen a lot of girls running around with Blackberrys and Treos, in the days before the iPhone, that had the phone because it had a keyboard, and everyone knew they were expensive. They had no clue how to even set up email on them. When I show some people all the things I can do with my phone, they say that's nice, but they don't need all that. We do live in a trendy society, and if the phone has been hyped enough, like the iPhone, and is easily identifiable, like the iPhone, then people will buy it. I can't tell you how many people confused my Sprint Touch with an iPhone!
Now the hardcore phone users, the ones that want the phone to do as much as possible, and modify to the nth degree seem to be more of a group of people that care a little less what the phone looks like. "You have to make the phone bigger for a microSD slot or a bigger battery?? Do it!" that's what they will say.
Why do you think the original Razr was such a huge success? Everyone loved how it looked, but really, it was a piece of crap, and people still bought it!
