All,
Whenever I read about Treo problems, I always chuckle a little bit, because we had it MUCH WORSE with the Kyocera 7135. (I have a VZW T650 now.)
We too had a freezing problem, and it almost always happened in "low signal" areas. We found a solution in a configuration screen that also exists in the T650, and out of habbit, I set it the same way in my T650 and I have NEVER had the "freeze" problem you all describe, and one of the office buildings I spend 30 hours a week in has a TERRIBLE signal.
What's that setting? In the T650 (yours may be different - I've only played with VZW's units, but I assume they are the same), go to the Preferences panel. Under the "General" section, go to the "Date & Time".
UNCHECK "Enable Local Network Time". Then manually set the Location, Date, and Time. Tap "Done."
My theory as to what's going on? When "Enable Local Network Time" is set, the device is perodically "pinging" the phone network to get the date and time. When there's a good signal, it gets the time more or less instantly, and you don't see a slowdown. In an area with a weak signal, the device sends out the ping, and waits for a response that isn't coming back (or is garbled, or whatever), and gets stuck. In an area with no signal, the device knows not to ping the network in the first place.
Do I know for sure that this works on a Treo? Nope. I just know FOR SURE that this works on the Kyocera 7135, and it just seems to me that the mechanism for updating network time would be similar between Palm-based smartphones. I also know that I've unchecked this setting and I've never experienced the problem in my T650.
So, having read this entire thread, I don't see that anyone has tried this. So would someone try it and post their results?
(As an aside, this means that if you travel across time zones, or daylight savings occurs, you're phone will be inaccurate until you re-adjust the time. What I do is simply re-enable this setting for a few minutes and let the clock re-sync itself, and then disable it again.)
Hope this helps,
Warr
