Hey all,

I bought a Treo 650 about 3 weeks ago but have been having some problems with the speaker phone function. At times the mic doesn't work and the person on the otherside couldn't hear me when I was on the speakerphone. Anyhoo, I'm getting it exchanged for a new Treo 650.

My query was this: will I be able to transfer all my present data (contacts, calendar, 3rd party software, etc) to the new Treo using the Hot-sync? Will there be an issue with the sync since the actual phone is not the same... prob has different serial # etc. I can use the same name on the phone but was concerned about the software recognizing it as another machine and not transfering data/software.

I'd appreciate any info anyone can provide.

Hotsync one last time on the old one, then hotsync the new one.

Hey there
I just swapped my 650 for a replacement model. I need to hotsync to get all my data onto the new phone. Should I have the conduits set to "Synchronize the Files" or to "Desktop Overwites Handheld"? Also for backup should I change the default to "Desktop Overwrites Handheld?" (it currently says Handheld Overwrites Desktop."

If this is a Treo 650 and the previous was a Treo 650 from the same carrier:

You do not need to change the settings, leave them at "synchronize the files." The PC will recognize the new Treo 650 as an "empty" device, it will ask you for the userid you wish to sync to (if you have more than one user on the PC) and then will resotre all PIM data and 3rd party software to the device.

(Warning to device upgraders -- do not do this if your are upgrading to a 650 from any prior Palm OS device -- in this case, you need to create a new userid and migrate your data according to the Palm Knowledge Base upgrade instructions.)

Actually, Perry, that's not necessary. If a device is empty, Hotsync will know it and will start the restore process; there's no need to change the action of the Backup conduit. In fact, you can run into a heap of trouble if you change the action of the Backup conduit to "Desktop overwrites handheld" and mistakenly make that the default. It's best to just leave the Backup conduit alone.

Well I went ahead and did the hotsync before waiting for a reply and I think I messed up. I did set it to "Desktop Overwrites Handheld" and now I can't seem to get back my old settings. What should I do? If it helps...I still have my first 650 with the old settings on it (the one that I will be sending back to the company because of another problem.) Should I do a hotsync with the old one to get the old settings back on and then hotsync the new one? The sync log says "Restore Synchronization Failed."

Return the default action of your Backup conduit to, "Handheld overwrites desktop", hard reset (delete all data) your new Treo and hotsync again.

As long as the new Treo has been freshly reset - and so is empty - there's no need to change the action of your PIM conduits; your Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Memos will be restored. If it would make you feel more secure, copy your user directory to the desktop for safe-keeping.

there are some settings that aren't saved via the backup process. I'm not sure of what isn't backed up, but that might be the problem.
