If you are not an international traveller, is there still an advantage to GSM phones over CDMA in the US as far as coverage and performance?

Yes...

1. You can put your SIM card into another GSM phone anytime (i.e. phone breakage) so you don't have to deal with your Cell Company's Procurement deparment.
2. If you put your address book in your SIM card, you can access your address book in another GSM phone.
3. Better coverage now that Cingular bought AT&T. (this is still under debate)

How many of you are going to wait for rebates? Or are you going to grab one as soon as it's released?

Depends, but likely I'll just buy it when it's available. I'm in Toronto and there will likely be at least 2 month delay for the phone to be offered through Rogers in Canada. When the phone is /finally/ officially available unlocked from P1 I will go to Rogers and ask them about it. If they can give me a hard date that is within a couple of weeks I'll wait, otherwise I'll likely just buy it. I'm in a 2 year contract right now that expires this February so Rogers is actually anxious to offer me a new discount on a handset, but they'll also just give me a rebate on my bill for signing a new contract, or I can go month to month and see what appears on the horizan.

If Cing and Vienna channels release at the same time, Vienna Channels. If Cingular comes out first with a rebate, I will buy Cingular and sell VC phones.

There is much benefit to most for GSM, read old posts in this thread, it has been belabored many times.

Well, I changed from T-Mo to Cingular today (better coverage in my house, Voice Connect, EDGE, generally more bars). My Cingular store guy says that I am first (and only) on his list for a 650. When he can, he will order and call me when he gets it. I will be eligible for a contract discount.

That said, I am more interested in an unlocked phone than in a discount.

mmm. I have a PDA2k, and am considering purchasing a GSM 650 for the soul purpose of being edge compat. I'm not sure if I can live with a non-multitasking OS again though

But edge would be sooo sweet over normal gprs.

Guy on phonescoop.com says that according to his clueless sources the phone won't be available until 2012 or so....or may Either one doesn't matter...I'm about to call frikin' sprint! DAAAAAAAAAAAN! :|

Well if you can wait to the end of the month, I got two between Jan 27 & 31st. One from my Cingular Rep, the other from my VC third party Palm partner who is supplying my company with software for the 650. So this sounds pretty certain.

End of the month sounds reasonable. (I'm still hopeful.) Middle of February would be frustrating but almost acceptable (assuming such a delay included an upgraded ROM patch to fix some of the Sprint issues.) But if for some reason it really was May as indicated by the phonescoop guy, well that's insane and I think P1 would be badly hurt by such a delay. Now if P1 is waiting on Cingular to release the unlocked GSM and Cingular wants to delay till May P1 should seriously consider releasing without them.

The reason why i think this date is more valid. Is my 3rd party vendor works closely with Cingular Business division. The third party vendors got shafted on this Road Show thing. They would really flip out if the phone was put off til May. It was the Cingular rep who contacted my 3rd party vendor to release the date, not the other way around.

agreed on the rom issues!

I could totally wait 'til the end of the month...who am I kidding...it's not like I'll even know it when the month is over!

I was at the MacWorld Expo today. As you requested, I went over to the Mark/Space booth and saw the MissingSync product. Thanks for asking me to do so. I bought it on the spot for the $29.99 show price.

Now to answer you questions. A)The software is upgraded to version 4.0. However, version 4.02 is being beta tested for release soon with MacOS 10.4 code named Tiger. B]) It works with the Treo 650. They were demostrating it with a 650 at the booth. C) Yes, there is a developer's kit for it, which has already gone out. The rep said check their website. Also, you can download a trial (my memories going bad here) developers kit for 15 days. Great product! The guy I spoke to said he used to work for PalmOne and that he was the former Product Manager of the HotSync development department. He said that that experience helped him develop MissingSync. I like the idea of being able to sync WIFI from 20 miles away at a Starbucks.

I went to an SBC Focus Future meeting today at Moscone West in San Francisco before attending the MacWorld Expo in Moscone South. I spoke with a Cingular rep in charge of promoting solutions and new applications with wireless for businesses. He informed that Cingular had completed its trial period and testing of the Treo 650. He further said that he had knowledge that the 650 had been submitted to the powers that be -- for approval. In other words, the phone is "in" or "nearing" the final stages of its approval process before release. As I started walking away he said, "there is lots of demand for that phone." I replied, "I know."
