Just remembered, another option if all you really want is to access file on you pc is to use something like Wifile:

This used to be a freeware app called Smbmate, but Handhigh bought and made it shareware instead. However, if your're industrious enough, you can still find download links to the freeware ver.

I use PalmVNC from Here: http://palmvnc2.free.fr/
It's free, uses compression and supports server side scaling. I can also access my machines use clients other then palm. It doesn't require an intermediate service.

I tried a free version of Winhand back in May of this year. It didn't include any security. So I paid from Palmgear for a version with security as advertised on his website, called the corporate version for $40. Anyway.. It ends up the security on this version didn't work with WinXP, only with Windows 98. The software developer for Winhand told me I had to upgrade to a version for $70 to get security on XP. He also wouldn't give me a refund. He also changed his web-site to reflect that the $40 only provided security on Win98. Luckily I had a saved copy of the original web-site. I had to go through Palmgear and my credit card company to get a refund.

It interesting that he is now offering a different type of Winhand service for free. It seems to use his server as an intermediate server to pass data. I wonder when he will start charging for service. I wonder how much. I don't trust the guy, but seems interesting.

Maybe someone should send an email asking how long it will be free? I would but he probably wouldn't answer me.

If you've got XP Pro I think using Mobile TS with Remote Desktop is the way to go. I haven't tried Winhand, but I did try Palm VNC and there was no comparison as far as speed is concerned. Mobile TS was much faster, and I believe the entire connection is secure. And I just noticed that it's on sale at Palmgear for $29 (regular $39).

i installed this on Tuesday (yesterday) and last nite it saved my ****.

I was at a client's house (I sell insurance) and I needed another quote. Turns out I had the proper software loaded on my office pc but not on my laptop. I pulled out the 650 opened a connection and ran the quote software. Ended up making the sale on that quote. Best damn free software ever!

How is the performance? I have used a few of these over my in-home WI-FI network on my PocketPC - it works OK at best - speed isn't great... especially when zooming into the screen or moving around the desktop. I would imagine it's even slower over the CDMA connection?

Well anyone who expects it to be broadband fast is an *****. It is what it is. It's fast enough to be useable. Better than PalmVNC anyway.

I'm seriously considering setting up this WinHand and just had a basic question. So you can pretty much transfer files from your PC to your Treo remotely and also run programs on your PC using the Treo. Is this correct? My PC is in another room from the living room. If I wanted to control iTunes on my PC from the living room on the couch while I was listening to music, can I do that? If so this is sweet. A free remote control app for iTunes

Well I installed win hand yesterday and have been using it all day today. It's really an amazing app. I was able to surf the web alot faster than the sprint vision plan can support on the built in blazer browser. It's nice to have the option of now being able to surf handheld optimized websites as well as regular websites at incredible speeds.

It's remarkably fast. I would say there is a few seconds delay but nothing like the delay of trying to wait for a regular website to load on the blazer browser. I liken the speed to something in between a high end dial up service and dsl which is pretty damn fast for a handheld loading full web pages and applications.

If it were able to support the sounds coming from your pc it would be perfect. But in terms of opening and operating any app on your pc it works perfectly. I downloaded some software to my pc. Surfed some porn and non porn related sites. lol Accessed message boards, etc.

I also like the fact that you have the clicking sound when clicking on an app, link, shortcut, etc. It assures you that you're clicking the right thing when using the app in a smaller zoom size. Trust me it's very useful when using the app in a nosey situation like the train.

It doesn't look like you'll be accessing video from your home pc because of the choppy delay and no sound. But that's fine, that why we have other video players on our treos.

The only other complaint I have is the stupid password that is provided to you to login when using the app on your treo. I have a hard time remembering it and wish there was a setting to change it to something else.

I would also include that there should probably be an option to shut your treo screen off after a certain amount of idle time when using the win hand application. To my surprise it stays on which was killing my battery.

I haven't tried PalmVNC so I can't really compare to say which is better or faster but I'm pretty happy with this win hand app and don't really feel need to try the alternatives unless they are faster, more user friendly and support some of the features that win hand fails to.

I definitely encourage all to give it a try or any alternatives others suggest. In either case just being able to have access most of your home pc's power in your handheld is just priceless and should just be a standard built in app instead of some of that other crap that p1 and sprint have included on the treo 650. (Sorry I had to throw a jab in there. lol)

I guess you can transfer files from your pc to your treo if you opened up your desktop pc email program and then emailed the files to your treo 650's versamail account or whatever email account you use with your treo. There might be other ways to remotely send files but I'm not aware of them.

You can definitely run programs on your pc via your treo. That's basically what the app is all about. And about your itunes question, Yes you can. I'm here at work and I opened up itunes and played some music. Granted since I'm miles away from my home I can't hear it but if I were in the bedroom or livingroom like you said i would be able to change the songs at any time using my treo. So it's definitely a free remote control for itunes among other things.

It's so funny you mention that. I was doing the same thing today to look into my office. Which then lead me to do a search for wireless webcams so I can include them in other rooms in my house so I can monitor my home from anywhere. lol

I gotta say - the possibilities are amazing... what a great app. I've used the PocketPC ones and they don't even come close to this. The Treo's form factor adds to it being able to use the directional pad to go thru the screen instead of tapping the on the PocketPC... and the performance is impressive to say the least.

I'm running it on a 2nd PC (acting as a media server of sorts) and I never have a session actively logged in on that PC - that is to say I login using Remote Desktop Connection from my 1st PC and eventually disconnect the session - it continues to run all the proper server apps and is logged in persay, but I cannot seem to access it thru Win-Hand. It connects but only gives me a blank screen. Similar problems on my PocketPC, but I think I have those sorted out. Anyone else having this issue?

I have Norton's Firewall but when I first installed WinHand, Norton said WinHand was trying to access the Internet and I told it to allow this function so I don't think that would be it.

It does work even faster thru Bluetooth. It loads very fast if you use reverse DUN. It still is quick using sprint vision. I just hope I can trust the win-hand creators since they can have access to any file because they are the middle party. Everything looks very well on 650. I just have a reset problem. If I enter the wrong password, or after logging off win hand, it will cause a hard reset and I will loose 2 of the 3 files to run win hand. I have to resync the files to make it work again. I think something else is interfering with the win hand software. Does anyone else have this problem?

Hey adean1979, what icon is shown on your windows tray (bottom right)? Is the win hand icon green or yellow? This software will work thru almost any firewall? Did you follow the instructions closely?

I was wondering how they got XP to run off a 24K 650! Yea, the site left a lot to be desired. I wonder how GOTOMYPC would run on the Treo. I think they have some sort of handheld client now.

Funny, their website really does not make it clear what this program is or how it can be used. This thread seems to do a better job!

I am assuming that I install this on my desktop, then I can access and use my desktop remotely from the Treo. Kinda like PCAnywhere, right?

Okay, I uninstalled it on the PC and Treo. I installed it all over again and now it's working. Who knows how I jacked it up the first time? Thanks guys.
