    Hi everyone!

I just bought an Arctic 680 from the Palm website. I needed an unlocked phone because I travel a lot to Asia and want to use 1 phone everywhere I go.

I am currently on Verizon, so I need to switch to Cingular. But I am not sure what plan to get. There seems to be a $40 plan, and also a $20 plan - what is the difference? What plan is recommended?

I plan to just buy from the Cingular website to avoid getting conned.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hey vks3,

I'm going to assume you are talking about the Data Plans so that is how I will answer you. Go get a Cingular Plan with a free phone offer. Add the Data plan you want. If all the SMS/MMS stuff is not important to you, go with the lowest plan that has unlimited data. Take the sim card and put it in your new 680, configure it to work on Cingulars network, and your done. Since you travel to Asia a lot, I'm sure you know the Cingular plan you choose here won't be going with you. You will have to get a local sim/calling card.
We are all dead, we just don't know it yet.

Here's a few threads with this same question that I found with a forum search. They should help you out.
    Treo 600 > Treo 650 > Treo 700p > Treo 700wx -> Mogul -> Touch Pro
You may like to flash, but your phone shouldn't. LED Killer

    Thanks for everyone's input.

Is there a way to avoid getting another phone? It is so stupid that Cingular online requires a phone.

Also, is there a way for me to get a Cingular SIM without a contract? Doesn't seem like it.

One other question - what is the difference between the $20 Media Max plan with unlimited data + 200 SMS, and the $20 unlimited Smartphone plan? Does the Smartphone plan include SMS as well? What are the differences between these two?

    Thanks for your help!

I tried to get the $20 data plan online from Cingular - the site wouldn't let me get it with a shared minute plan - individual plans only

You can get the sim with a plan (if you sign a contract you get m2m, otherwise you don't)

BUT, what the above reply is referring to is:

SIGN up with cingular, and get a cheap phone (sell it on ebay or keep it as a back-up phone, always a good idea)...

BUT, sign up with the $20 or even $30 media plan. BOTH of these offer text messages (mms msgs)...

IF you go and sign up with cingular AND TELL THEM YOU HAVE A T680, they (if the CSR knows what he is doing) will force you to get the Smartphone data plan (w/o txt msgs) at $40.

FROM experience from a LOT of us Cingular users with Treo's is that the $20 plan works just as well.
You have an unlocked T680, so all you'll need is to get the proper settings and you'll be good to get online!!!

Any questions about what those settings are just ask here or do a search here or at

BTW, I recently unlocked my T650 and it was AWESOME while on my trip to Munich... omg, ALL of my information with me on my travels?
It was simply awesome to be able to use my T650 on the road!!!
Now it's the WAITING GAME: a GSM Palm Pre
    T680 (COPPER) + Cingular = FUN!!
    My T650 & 6230b and NX70 are retired... =(

You should get Tmobile service. They have better rates. I love my Tmobile service.
