Palm Desktop 4.0 released

Anyone know if/when Handspring will release an update of their own so I don't have to do all this?

After installing Palm Desktop 4.0, I installed the Hotsync Manager using the Desktop 3.1 downloaded from Handspring instead of the one on the original CD. Everything was fine except that the file PALM.CNT was deleted. The file PALMCMN.DLL seems to be identical in both 4.0 and 3.1. Maybe it's different in an earlier version (when did you buy your Visor?).

The new look is much better.

At that point here was my workaround:

1. I reinstalled the PalmDesktop 4.0.

2. Copied the file PALMCMN.DLL to a temporary directory.

3. Using your Handspring CD, do a Custom Install, and choose to install ONLY HotSync Manager.

4. Copy palm.cnt from wherever you stored it temporarily back into C:\Program Files\Palm or wherever you installed Desktop.

5. Copied PALMCMN.DLL backto C:\Program Files\Palm or wherever you installed Desktop.

This worked for me. No errors and have been enjoying PalmDesktop 4.0.

What is the plam.cnf file and what do I lose if it get's overwritten?

The palm.cnt file is the table of contents for the palm.hlp file. In Windows, almost all .hlp files have a corresponding .cnt (contents) file.

I also suffered through 3 or 4 attempts to get the new Palm desktop to work with the USB synching.

Then it clicked, thanks to all the posts here. As it turns out, it was easy.

1)download and unzip the PALM 4 zip mentioned in the first thread.

2)Run the SETUP.EXE file you'll discover among those unzipped files.

3)Install it in the same directory as your handspring-installed palm desktop.

4)In the c:\program files\palm directory, find PALMCMN.DLL and copy it somewhere else. I simply dragged mine to my desktop.

5)From the Handspring CD-ROM, select Custom install, then ONLY the USB Hotsynch feature to install.

6)Exit the handspring CD-ROM. Click on the little Hotsynch manager icon next to your startbar clock, and click EXIT to turn it off.

7)delete the file PALMCMN.DLL from the c:\program files\palm directory. Copy the saved version (mine was on my desktop) back into that directory.

You're done. Now run the Hotsynch manager .EXE file you'll see in the Palm directory. You can now hotsynch to the new Palm 4.0 desktop! The new Palm desktop should also work as advertised.

I'm having a problem with the Year view of Palm Desktop 4.0. If I open up Desktop and switch from one of the other datebook views (i.e. Day, Week, Month) to Year view, I have no indication that I have any events scheduled for this year, when I know that I do. If I advance the screen to show me next year, then come back to this year, all of the appropriate events are indicated.

Anyone else having this problem?

Same problem here...

While there's no visual indication of an event in the calendar, holding the mouse pointer over a day with one does cause the little popup tip window to open showing the details.

Has anyone noticed that if you open the edit window to edit an event, address item, or to do, the button to close and accept the edit is labeled "&OK" rathere than just "OK"? Is this a cosmetic error in the program?

The memo pad edits have the usual "OK" button that we're all use to.

Just wondering.

In the Date Book Options- I wish Palm could have made the "Workday begins" setting 24 Hours? They got from 12AM to 1PM as the only options. Some Visor users should have a second or third shift job.

There got to be a better way of setting up and managing repending events in the Date Book? There isn't a area in Palm Desktop 4.0 that has a listing of events or repending events that were created. All that is there is a "New Event" button. Looks like a Event Manager need to be added to Palm Desktop 4.0.

I downloaded Handsprings 3.1 updater software to do the custom (hotsync only) install from, since my CD is from 1999. I installed Desktop 4.0 over my current, then went to install the hotsync, but it gives me an error at 1% of install about ConMgr.dll. Before that, it asks me if I want to keep my 3rd party conduits (I have Pocket Quicken and AvantGo)and I said yes. I tried it a second time, saying no, and it still gave the error. Why is this?

Well, it turns out that I was so excited about the new desktop alarms feature, I enabled it as soon as I saw it, but before installing the hotsync manager again. Handsprings Hotsync manager didn't like the alarm thing running in the background.

Palm Desktop 4.0 will happily tell you what each DLL is for if you go to Help -> About and hit More Info, which may help in figuring out precisely what needs to be replaced to get Handspring USB HotSync to work.

I'm at work with my serial cradle now, but will be checking it out later on at home

Simply download the Palm 4.0 Desktop and install it. Then pull out your HAndspring CD and select to install for your Visor but select CUSTOM (not Typical) and uncheck all boxes except for the HOTSYNC.

Palm Desktop will work and so will USB syncing.

My Prism works fine.

I haven't experienced this on my 95 and 98SE computers (both at 1024x768, 16-bit and using one of the MS-supplied fonts).

I'm guessing here, but it could be either a video driver or font problem, or-- one of the shared libraries the Palm Desktop relies on didn't get updated or got corrupted. I'm leaning towards the latter since the Memo Pad shows the correct text for the OK button.

How did you update yourself to 4.0? Did you install it over your 3.0.1 or 3.1 desktop?

Here is the response from HS regarding the new desktop...

"Thank you for contacting Handspring Technical Support.

Palm has recently released Palm Desktop v4.0 on their website. Handspring is currently evaluating this new version for use with Visor handhelds. Palm Desktop v4.0 is currently not supported."

Looks like we are on our own if we want to use the new desktop... should be a piece of cake, thanks to previous posts here and those who figured it out.

Hopefully HS will correct the bugs that have been found (as discussed above) before they release a USB version.

Keep in mind that there are at least three (probably four) different versions of Palm Desktop that have been released by Handspring (on the Original/Deluxe CD, the update to that to support W2K, and the latest update on the website to 3.1; I don't have a Prism/Platinum but I assume that was another version as well.) Each one has different versions of certain DLLs that may or may not be used by Palm Desktop 4.0. On top of that, I'd wager that the install on 98/ME is going to be slightly different from the install on W2K.

So just because it works for you doesn't mean that it'll work for everyone; given the contents of this thread, I'd say it isn't working for everyone.

Hi,
If Handspring can add a "Event Manager" to their version, It'll be more worth while the download. If not, V4.0 will just have to do for me.
