    There have been some posts regarding how much Microsoft makes on Android and how it is expensive for companies to use.

    If WebOS is truly getting rid of all proprietary drivers, etc. it could possibly give WebOS a leg up with manufacturers.

    If this is the reason for what they are doing, it could be a contender.

    Microsoft is making Android expensive because of patent litigation and settlement licensing. Everything in it was supposed to be open source, but some of it may violate Microsoft patents. There's not telling what in Open webOS might also draw the ire of Microsoft (or god forbid Apple), but that'll only have a chance of happening if it ever catches on.
