    Here's the story:

My friend is having a lot of billing issues with Sprint, so he sold me his Palm Pre. I like this phone a lot, I was always borrowing it from him, so I'd like it on my account so I can use it. Since he has some debts on that account, the ESN won't transfer.

    Here's the question:

Can I give him one of my old, working Sprint phones that is no longer attached to an account, and switch his ESN using that phone on his own account? Would that clear the Pre ESN?

Nope...Sprint will still associate that ESN with the "billing issues" whether the phone is active or not. Have your friend make things right with Sprint and that will clear the ESN for use by you. If he is unwilling then you could try here for a cheap Pre.
