It's just an optical illusion that you're seeing, actually. The matte plastic back has a larger-radius edge and a softer-touch surface, which makes the whole thing looks thicker than it really is. A smaller-radius edge and a solid-smooth surface will give the illusion of a thinner object.
You can observe the same illusion in other electronic devices and also in cars, and to some extent high-end clothing as well. The "tight" fit and finish feeling is often because the edges are very crisp, defined due to the small-radius edge.
