I just read a Tech Crunch article lambasting the carriers for not letting the Android platform be as open as it seems to promise.

The article is called "Android Is As Open As The Clenched Fist Id Like To Punch The Carriers With", I'd like to it but I apparently am not allowed to post links until I have a higher post count

I was mildly annoyed that there was no hat tip in WebOS direction as, in my opinion, it has seemed to be far more of an open platform that anything else. If for no other reason than the WebOSDoctor allows us to easily undo everything so as to never actually brick the phone, thus there should be little fear of patching.

But that got me thinking, what are the barriers to openenss? Will the carriers be able to cripple future webos devices? Will HP tighten the reigns?

Conversely, is there anything that HP/Palm can do to further improve in this area? Or do we really have it just that sweet already (AUPT does make things pretty awesome ?
