I have an orange branded phone that has not been flashed to any custom or official roms. If I want to upgrade to 1.28, should I flash it with 1.23 first? Or could I go direct to 1.28?

Thats the key question, maybe someone like Richks (Famously the first person with an Orange UK phone to flash to 1.23) can help us

    Hi there, guys

I upgraded my brothers orange branded treo 650, that I updated to 1.23 and now to 1.28, have more memory slightly and the volume is louder. Also no crashes what so ever,

If you cant flash the rom straight to 1.28 it will simply tell you unavle too. In that case update using beta then official 1.28 longway but same end result.

sayem - how did you upgrade? what instructions did you follow?
  6. #206
I updated from an Orange treo (FW 1.09) to 1.23 then to 1.28.

I followed the instructions at http://discussion.treocentral.com/sh...ad.php?t=87669

I backed up both palms then hard reset then created a new user name. Then put all the files on to the new user account. It started ti flash once the hotysync was over asked to be plugged into mains though.

Once I did both I erased the other user name, and volia both flashed and restored using the actual hotsyn names.

    Thanks guys, I went from 1.23 (14.3meg) to 1.28 (15meg) - no problems

I hope this isn't going to sound like a dumb question but I have to take that risk.

How the heck do you swich off the infernal key beep and error tone using the Orange SW (I just got my 650 on Friday and I'm not quite ready to start flashing yet as I haven't found any serious problems)?

I've gone intp Prefs and set the system sound to Off but I still get beeps when I tap on-screen buttons and an error tone if I tap in the wrong place. I also get tones when hotsyncing.

I'm sure there was an explicit menu for key tones etc on the 600 but I can't find it on the 650. Have Orange 'hidden' it in their SW?

Thanks - these tones are driving me crazy and the error tone significantly slows down SuDoku :-) I know I can use the switch to turn off all sound but I don't want to do that (except when I'm in meetings) and it doesn't fix the delay when the error tone plays.

    Help!

Other than that I am delighted with my new toy. Versamail is so easy I find myself using it in preferance to firing up the PC and DataViz sheet to go has just saved me from having to borrow a laptop next weekend. The 650 is now as fully functional as my old Psion5mx was with the added advantage of a full colour touchscreen (and not having to carry a seperate phone of course). Anyone want to but a Treo 600? It'll be going on ebay later today.

"System sound" to off does switch it off, sometimes....
I found it worked for a while and then came back on for no apparent reason. However, after doing it a couple of times it is now off and seems to stay off.

Yes, I just tried switching it back on and off and it has now stopped.

    Very odd.

Is this just a problem with the Orange SW or a general 650 problem? I don't recall reading about it.

I have never had this problem, but then:

    a) I've always run the latest firmware (ie not Orange's), and

    b) I probably wouldn't have noticed because I'm not exactly sherlock holmes when it comes to this kind of thing.

I like to stick with the 'official' sw until either:
    1) I find a fault I can't tolerate
    2) A new 'official' version comes out
    or
    3) The unofficial version has undergone a few revisions and is considered completely stable.

This applies with most SW but even more so with an essential item like a phone and where I can't go back to the old SW if I find problems.

The release of 1.28 sounds like it might tick box 3 but I'll give it a few weeks before I jump. I've had a couple of unexplained resets already which I rarely did with the 600 so there are clearly some things that need sorting.

Am up and running with 1.28 (phone 1.13). Experienced a lot of problems with MissingSync (Mac) on the way - eventually ditched it on Markspace's recommendations and completed installation using the 'alternative method' on Palm Desktop. No battery drain problems either (ensured unit was fully charged and on the cradle all the way through). Extremely pleased! Will let you know if any problems occur.

Did you upgrade from 1.21 or 1.23 ?
What changes, other than non Orange stuff, have you noticed so far.

I assume that 1.21 was a major step forward for free memory, so really the "big" one for most of us would be improved ear piece sound.
    Any improvement there

    Cheers

Earpiece SEEMS louder, but other people have complained that I sound a bit faint on occasion. Having said that, reception both in my flat and office is rubbish due to location and metal framed buildings. When I'm out in the open I have to say that it's easier to hear people with 1.28.

    Chas T:

When I got the unit 2-3 weeks ago I read up on TreoCentral and noticed that people were complaining about the Orange phone interface (although some people in the US liked the picture- the grass is always greener!). Decided it was indeed a triumph of form over function. So I quickly upgraded to 1.21 using the rewritten TryCard to carry the update. Now I have gone to 1.28 and it is still going well. I was hoping that it might sort BT Voice Dial on my Nokia CarKit but no dice there (everything else works fine, more memory, no resets as yet). I have no volume issues and am very pleased with the unit so far. It would be a tragedy if Orange were to withdraw it from the UK - they should give it a chance and ensure that there is a specialist support team in place (oh and drop their phone interface for people who prefer functionality).

Am hoping Voice Dialler Pro might sort out the BT voice dialling in their update on Weds but don't hold out much hope. For me it is the only fly in the ointment.

    Worth noting:

I installed VolumeCare (Google it) which allows you to alter the volume of various things. If I max out the Handset and Mic settings using that, it seems much better.

Sorry, didn't realise that version wasn't on their site.

    It's fab, I gotta say.
