Hi all first post. My Treo 600 aerial fell off a little while ago so I am keenly awaiting the 650. I handle our company mobile contract, this is as quoted by my Orange Account Handler yesterday -

"Treo 650 will be arriving in March - late probably but as soon as they are in I will have ***** call and arrange an upgrade for you."

Hopefully sooner but I won't be holding my breath...

With my t68i and UX50 combo it could work using BT I guess...
But not sure if prepaid providers support GPRS..
I use Virgin's GPRS (or as they call it "Enhanced WAP"). It costs 0.5p per Kb, so I only use it when I really need it!

It's a bit tricky to set up, but let me know if you want details.

    Meanwhile, back to Orange...

Here is a page for tips about how to get the best deal from your carrier. A guy got a Treo 600 for 19.90 instead of 119.90. It might be worth bearing in mind for when the Treo 650 eventually arrives (hopefully soon)

Worth a try Stig! My contract expired in December so I'm not in a bad bargaining position!

Treo 650 better arrive soon though because I have my eye on the O2 XDAII mini!

    Intresting.

A little off topic: I have had my treo since April on Orange - but the phone is causing me no end of problems - (can't answer calls, soft resets all the time, can't dial out etc etc) - I have no Orange care insurance - what are my options?

I did that! Got my Treo 600 for 19.99 as an upgrade on Orange about 14 months ago. Instead of the 230 they wanted to charge for the upgrade, or the 110 for a new connection. Basically I phoned them up and told them I didn't think much of the way they were trying to charge me 120 extra for being a loyal customer of 5 years, and that as a result I had seen a rather good offer on O2 for an XDA and was calling to cancel my account. I get passed over to the emergency save operator and told I can have one for 19.99, but that I'd have to wait 2 weeks. It was still with me in time for Halloween

I know what you mean...I think I'm going to buy a motorola V3 and Tungsten C off ebay and use them for a few months or however long it takes until the 650 comes out. I could get a V3 on a new contract but that would tie me in for 12 months which i don't want. Then I'll flog them both again on ebay and try and get a good deal contract wise on the 650 when it's bug free and stable...I've done this in the past and it ended up working out okay financially.

Setting for Virgin UK GPRS (Enhanced WAP) for Treo 600:

Name: Virgin GPRS (it doesn't really matter what you call it)
    Connection: GPRS
    User Name: user
    Password: <blank>
    APN: goto.virginmobile.uk

Go to "Details" and "Advanced" and make sure that IP Address Automatic is ticked and that Query DNS is also ticked.

For Blazer - go to the "Options" menu and select "Preferences", then "Advanced" then "Set Proxy". Tick the "Use Proxy" box and enter the
    following:

    Proxy server : 193.30.166.4
    Port: 8080

To get to the 'Virgin Bites' page use this (complex!) URL:

    http://kevxml.infospace.com/_1_SOTIV033GE7YO_14841997_infow.bitesw/x/i.xhtml?id=home

    I hope that is useful!

    Hi,

Just a side note, I went into an orange store the other and although the initially said they didnt have any details, they then brought up a whole section on their intranet! Still no solid release date tho.

I spoke to someone in upgrades today and they said that they now have the 650 under review and the release is set for February. This is only one person, and I couldn't get anything more specific. I did ask if it was 3G, and she went and did some looking before coming back with a definative no. Looks like good news.

I swung by a Vodafone store on Fleet Street (London) and asked about the 650. I was told that they would not carry the phone and that I could always bring an unlocked model back from North America and they would be happy to be my UK serivce provider (she picked up on my Canadian accent)

Anyway, the lady knew exactly what a Treo 650 is and gave me a prompt and confident reply. Too bad really, I would like to stay with Vodafone instead of porting over to Orange...

Looking at the US prices I wonder if it will be worth buying across the pond (poss about 250 (edited - Singular costs $599 so say 350)with current 1:2 exchange rate) an unlocked machine and then using it on your preferred network (Voda in my case). Or is this too risky in Treocentral Uk users opinions for faulty phone swaps etc?

May consider some form of insurance this time - T270 still not recovered since washing it at 40 deg C with fabric conditioner whilst on skiing holiday! My fault!

expansys will sell you an unlocked one after it has been released in the uk but they were looking for over 400 quid for the 600 so it's likely to be as expensive for the 650

I'm not sure what to do. My Treo 600 is damaged after being dropped a few times - it works only some of the time. Orange say that I can have a replacement if I pay 100 and take out orange care going forward. However my contract is up 17th of May and the 650 will be avilable then

Do you have an old phone you can use to bridge the gap? (providing you can live without a PDA that long)
