Was at an Orange location in central London on the weekend. The rep told me the 650 would be available after Christmas.

While I wouldn't trust everything phone reps say, the fact that he'd heard about the 650 and its availability does hint at an imminent release. Although I don't believe it'll be available the day after Christmas, a February release seems realistic...

the problem here of course is that Orange are a bit daft when it comes to upgrading...if you just want to upgrade and keep the same contract there is only a limited choice of phones and it can cost up to 50 to upgrade. However, if you cancel your contract and start a new one with a new number you can have any phone on a better deal plus you get 50 trade in.

yah it looks like I'm gonna ship one of my numbers in for a new contract on Orange just for the saving on the new 650.....but won't trade my 600 for 50 quid....must be joking. The other thing to do is move number to another provider on pay as you go...and then move back to orange some months later....but you didn't hear that from me...

Bought the magazine PDA Essentials (issue 32) yesterday and on page 6 it states under "Breaking News" that the Treo 650 will "finally reach these shores in the spring".

Another date to add to the list.

I like PDA essentials but the problem I find with these types of mags is that by the time they hit the shelves their news etc can be out of date. They have probably got that spring date from elsewhere as they don't appear to have a lot of interest in the treo range judging from past issues. I hope it is before spring which could be as late as April / May which would be an unbearable wait for me ! Come on Orange / Vodaphone etc get yer fingers oot yer proverbials and give us some news please

PalmOne may yet stage a renaissance. The vendor's Treo 600 was well received in the US but sold poorly in Europe. Various excuses for this have been bandied around, but a restrictive and ultimately disappointing exclusive deal with Orange, and different buying and usage cultures in Europe are probably contributory factors.

I still can not see the sense in only selling the 600 through Orange.

Last week the Telegraph had a top 10 smartphones for xmas article.
No Treo in there, good old Palmone, missed the boat again

    Thought of the day :
No sense being pessimistic, it probably wouldn't work anyway

I agree....I don't think Orange promoted the 600 well, if at all. I'd like to see another carrier selling it, this would give us all some options as to pricing / upgrading and generally getting the prospect of a better deal when it comes out as Orange upgrade policy is less than generous.

I agree. I didn't buy the previous issue because it stated that the Treo 650 will have a 1.3MP camera- when of course, sadly it has not.

I have been a buyer of PDA Essentials for a while now, but am getting bored with it lately- plus it's not that cheap and the free cd that comes with it ain't much cop!

Just thought I'd add the info of a date as it was in a mag!

I have my eye on the XDAII mini- but I can't bring myself to bite the bullet as I've invested so much money in Palm software. Guess I'll wait for the Treo 650, even though my contracts just finished with Orange.

PDA essentials is useful but little more...it seems full of what appear to be very interesting, informative articles that in fact once read tell you very little you didn't know in the first place ! And the fact of course it also covers pocket pc and symbian is of very little interest to me personally and reduces the maount of coverage given to palm stuff. Plus, I can only seem to get it in WH Smith's and there's not one around here for miles anymore so it's hard to find. The CD is PC only so I can't use it on my mac at home which is not much use.
I've been swithering for months now about going for a seperate pda / phone or possibly ppc but I'm like you, the thought of having to start from scratch software wise if I do go for pocket pc is too big a hurdle for me to overcome. Plus, I'm not a big fan of windows o/s anyway as for me, it's not as user friendly as palm. I would go back to the separate pda / phone combo if I could find a basic phone that had email and internet that was simple to set up and had some form of on screen keyboard text entry system....looks like I'll be waiting until next spring then. Personally, I still think the 650 will be out later Jan / February.

So, we're still no wiser? What's the best option as far as alternatives goes then? Bear in mind I MUST have a) a keyboard and b) email that's not "teh suck". and it has to be an all in one unit, no extra keyboard malarkey.

And battery life greater than 20 minutes, so not PPC then

wish I knew...there's just so little choice at the moment...all these proposed palm smartphones that we keep reading about never seem to materialise and never seem to be for sale. I like my treo, don't get me wrong, but it's astounding to think that it has been out in the uk for over a year now and still has no other competition in the palm department. This makes having to wait for the hi res version all the more frustrating. I'm sure a few other people would have jumped ship by now had there been something else running palm on the go..no ?

Anyone got an update from Orange on when they will make the 650 available in the UK????

Latest info I've had from Orange (5 Jan):

"there is still no official communication about this. However, I am
expecting that we will be ranging the phone and would expect it to be
    available before 1st March."
  14. #74
March 1 sounds logical, it allways takes a while for new models to be released outside the US and since the GSM model isnt available in the US yet, march 1 seems reasonable..

on another note, if I get the unlocked GSM model from the US which providers provide a dataplan without a phone?
    Any recomendations?

well done Mark C...at last some sort of official statement which is encouraging..as a matter of interest, how many of us 600 owners will be upgrading ? I could have changed my phone last October but am hanging on till the 650 is out, I remain tempted however by that Motorola razor phone in which case I'd go back to a separate phone / pda combo again. I'd prefer not to do that though..

I'm not sure what you want to do. If you want pay as you go, I think all the providers will sell you a SIM card for a nominal fee. Orange do it for a fiver:

    http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/sim_connection_pack

PAYG is a very expensive way of making calls and using data services though and really only makes sense if you don't plan to much of either. If you plan to make any number of calls and use anything like a decent amount of data and will be in the country for twelve months then getting a pay monthly contract (which you will be tied to for a year) is almost certainly the cheapest way to go. You can take a look at Orange pay monthly plans here:

    http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/buildYourPlan

I expect you could get them to give you just a SIM card and no phone with a pay monthly contract, but why would you want to? There are lots phones that come free when you sign a contract and you might as well get one even if you rarely use it or just give it away. The SIM you get should work just fine in an unlocked GSM 650. You can see the free Orange pay monthly phones (and the ones that aren't free) here:

    http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/show/h...onthly/all/all

I'm giving examples from Orange but this is really just because they're my provider and I know my way around their web site; essentially the same things could be said of the other major providers and you could have a look at them too:

    http://www.vodafone.co.uk/
    http://www.02.co.uk/
    http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/

Which is best? I can't really say. I've used Vodafone and Orange and in my experience both have excellent coverage apart from some of the more sparsely populated bits of the UK. I've only used a Treo on Orange and can say that GPRS is less reliable than GPRS with an SE T68i on Vodafone. I suspect that this is more to do with provider than phones and that Voda GPRS is the more stable. As far as I know, no provider in the UK has functioning EDGE.

sorry, let me clarify, at the moment I'm using virgin mobile pay as you go since I dont make that many calls.
But when I get my 650 I expect to use the data part quite a bit, so am looking for the best plan to do this..

I'll check out the websites you provided, thanks.

I think I'll probably get the 650. I've been tempted by other phones especially the IMATE JAM (which I'd still like to take a look at) but the 600 has been great for me and I pretty much know what I would be getting with the 650. I expect if I got the JAM I'd either spend twelve months missing the keyboard and treo-style one-handed navigation or (more likely) sell the JAM, go back to the 600 for a while and probably end up upgrading to the 650 anyway - all at great expense.

I was looking at a friends V3 a couple of weeks ago and I'm pretty sure this would be the phone I'd get if I was after a non-combo device (but I'm not )

I think Orange were the cheapest last time I looked but of course cost isn't everything. Can you comment on GPRS on Virgin (T-Mobile)? I'm pretty interested in moving to another carrier and would value any info anyone can give on GPRS quality (connection availability, connection stability and speed) of the various networks.

To be honest, I couldnt find any info on it on the virgin website and never got round calling them to set it up..
With my t68i and UX50 combo it could work using BT I guess...
But not sure if prepaid providers support GPRS..
