would've been simpler just to ban ttrundle for posting off topic hatred in a thread for posting dog pics.

What amazes me is that no mod ever acknowledged what seemed to be clear to EVERY other poster in that thread. We all complained and we are the @ss holes.

toolkit...thanks for your work here. Make sure you are being honest with yourself.
Everyone that complained about this situation also said in general the mods do a great job.

Often times when there is acomplaint it turns into the mods becoming defensive instead of dealing with the issue.

These are not blanket statements of course. Mark, James and especially ronbo I have found to be pretty consistent.

I know that I could've ignored posts like "a pit bull isn't even a pit" and they should all be put down"

but I also have an investment in this forum and that kind of hate is not consistent with treocentral. When I complained, your response to me was unbelievable. You told me to grow up.

My friend, moderator or not...you know too little of me to have the right to say that.

    My sincere best to you.

When a member acts up, they're grade school; when a mod acts up, they're moderating...imagine that?

Anyway, the only thing that was being asked was for a mod to EXPLAIN why they did what they did, and some of the mods here have this need to defend themselves when their actions are called into question. Being a moderator doesnt make one any better or worse than the members.

I've never had a problem with "keeping things clean and smooth" my problem has always been the inconsistant way it is done/not done! This is ONE of the many reasons why SOOOOOO many people jumped this ship and went to MTDN!

I've spend years on this forum and have spend many hours moderating, but lately any action that is taken by the mods gets attacked.
All of us who moderate forums know that its not always easy; whats harder is to not take everything about moderating so personally.

People, count how many times asking a mod a question has come back with the above answer - they are being attacked!?!

TreoCentral needs to start realizing that it is the MEMBERS and NOT the moderators who keep a forum going. It is word of mouth from Treo users which points people to this site most of the time.

I dont think its too much for the moderators to step back and realize that they wouldnt have anything to moderate if they didnt have this many faithful members to begin with.
Sometimes I think TC thinks it is the only Treo site around.

As far as trolls are concerned, not TC or any other forum is going to stop a troll.

This goes way beyond that, that thread was just the proverbial drop..

And that's where the problem lies, when the mods act we get a whole bunch of whining (ironally a lot of time by people who accuse others of whining)
It has been said a million times before, if you have a prob with the mods email marcus. I wonder if you get pulled over by a cop if you give him lip too?

Mods have the nasty job of making sure the rules are followed. If the users decide they dont like the rules and don't respect them the inmates are starting to run the assylum.. since the mods are way understaffed things are getting out of control, especially with the admins being in invisible man mode.

Under most state laws if a police officer is being anything but absolutely professional, you may ask him/her to write down for you his/her badge number and direct phone number of his/her supervisor. You may at that point file a complaint that will remain in that officer's file and will even be reviewed when that officer is up for promotion.

You have used this analogy before. If you saw yourself as some "TC COP" who answers to no one, perhaps this is all for the best.

    .
Same can be done here.. you know my 'badge number' and marcus is only an email away..
My point is you would disobey an officer of the law and tell him he's doing a bad job and you'll set your own rules. Same applies here, the mods are officers of the TC law so to speak. But we are on our own without backup facing an unhappy mob..

When I started I did not feel that way, but lately I feel like a kindergarten cop.
As for answering to no one, that is nonsence, I answer to the owners of this site, since it is them who have the final say. I hate to burst your buble, though the users are an important part of this community (the most important part even) they do not set the rules.
It is a take it or leave it situation. As mods we've tried about everything in our control appart from banning large numbers of users. Speaking for myself and most likely for all the other mods, I do not enjoy having to enforce the rules, be the 'bad cop', close threads, ban people etc. but it is an neccesary part of the job. As a matter of fact I try to let things fly as freely as possible, that is probably where I went wrong, some people saw that as a sign they could rule the place.
And when you are strict you get attacked too, so it is a loose-loose situation for me and I'm saying 'no thank you' to that from now on.

The fact that insertions nice token to create a farewell thread turns into yet another attack just proves my point..
The mods are volunteers, and IMHO you should enjoy a volunteer job not get frustrated over it..

Sorry...I was just responding to posts...I never meant to attack...that is the truth.

I took your calling me a child as an attack. You can see how it goes both ways.

For my part in taking the fun out of your volunteer job, I am truly sorry. Please know that whenever I made questions about moderation it was not an attack. I say only what I mean and nothing more.

    My best to you.

Why is it different now than when it was visorcentral?
I would say when we had visor discussions, people would post more mature questions and discussions because most of us were grown ups and the other younger people were following that example. I don't recall seeing issues like this before. Now with the Treo 650, I see a lot of inmature people flaming others or posting nonsense. I guess the more open to the public our Treo gets the most variety of people we get.

I'd venture to say the Visors and Treos before the 600 had mainly an adult following. Since the 600 and now the 650 are being used more and more by "celebrities", i.e. actors, singers, rappers........ now kids (who imitate their idols in many ways....including the way they dress and accessorize) are buying the pda/phones more because it's "cool" than because they really need a pda/phone. Hence; the immaturity of many of the newer members. Kids will be kids. Wasn't there a poll recently on the age of tc members? I wonder if there was a poll about that 2 or more years ago.

I think some self-moderation could go a long way.

There is a great deal more thread-hijacking going on. There are "inside jokes" that are now appearing in every thread, and not just the off topic ones. Actual Treo-related threads have about 3 posts of on topic discussion, followed by 14 posts of unrelated one-liners. For that matter, even the off topic threads, are going way off topic.

I'm not knocking the one-liners and inside jokes. I like to add a few myself from time to time. I'm just encouraging us (us, as in me included) to limit some of that extra chatter.

I agree, it would be nice to see the treo topics actually stay that way, instead of becoming a joke fest. Humor is great and all but, just answer the posters question.

As to Off topic I think that is the nature of off topic. Unless it becomes a flame fest, I don;t have isue with OT threads going OT.
