I truly wanted to post this in the Shadowmite PopSci thread, but as a moderator I feel its important to respect Toolkit's requests to stay on topic. Moderators, if you're listening? Toolkit wasn't extremely out of line. It wasn't a horrible flame the way he fussed at the original poster. However, it WAS very wrong the way he came down on everyone for getting "off topic". What a crock! Thousands of posts get "off topic", and when they get truly out of hand, a mod will step in. In my opinion that was not the case here. Toolkit stepped out of line. The posters of T|C called him on it, and he immediately began his "back on topic, guys" posts. Now I understand, if I'd been called on such an obvious mistake I would have a tough time admitting I had come off sounding like an ***, but I'm NOT a mod on this board. I know this will probably NEVER see much action as far as threads go, way down here where its buried, but that's where Toolkit said to post it. And I'm SURE I'll never see a response from a mod (wouldn't expect you guys to publicly call each other out), but his post was as out of line as anything Seldom Visitor, The Zen of Palm, or even, God forbid my saying it, PurpleX ever said. I know he apologized, but don't start shutting everyone down in some sort of attempt to gloss over it.
Incidentally, didn't Shadowmite leave, or at least threaten to leave (I wasn't really paying attention that day) over the way many people here were posting about him? Mods should be an example of the way TO act, shouldn't they?

...but sometimes I'm that guy that can't stay away from an argument. I just finished reading the thread ronbo closed (can't remember the title) and I have to disagree with PunkAce. I think the mods on this board are pretty fair as far as that goes. I've been threatened with a "banning" once, by Kurt actually, but you know what? I deserved it that day. It didn't FEEL like it at the time, and I got pretty angry at the PM he sent me telling me to "knock it off", but he was right. That being said, I think the mods could take a step back and look at how they're coming across. When I joined this board (I lurked for about six months prior) a mod was someone who didn't really post much, especially in extremely inflammatory threads, unless it was to "moderate" them. I can actually remember being sad when Kurt was chosen because I figured we wouldn't hear from him as much and I enjoyed most of his posts. I remember thinking "Lord, I hope they don't promote Gfunk next!".
Here lately it has seemed as if many mods step on peoples toes too quickly, and let their own opinions guide their decisions. I could point to a few cases where threads containing arguments being conducted by a mod weren't closed, when if it had been me and some other member they would have been. I'm sorry, but I think hypocrisy was the right choice of words, and I think PunkAce's sentiment bears some merit. Take a look, mods. Review some of the threads. It isn't a MASSIVE issue, but it could be. I don't want this to turn in to Howard Forums.

I made my opinion on the SM/PopSci thread, but I'll repeat it. I may be not his biggest fan (I refuse to publically air them, but he knows), but people jumped on his *** for correcting someones grammar and spelling when he never even did that in the first place. I thought it was ridiculous the way everyone piled on him like that.

I've been a mod as well, and know his situation. If you defend yourself, you're not being "Modly". If you close the thread, it looks like you did it because you're a baby. He was in a no-win situation.

I think he created the situation himself, by not reading the guys post carefully before he chastised him about "Searching". He didn't correct grammar and spelling, but he did make assumptions about where the guy was from because 1 word was misspelled. Granted, the spelling thing blew up bigger than it needed to, but could have easily been prevented. Everyone assumed Toolkit had derogatory intentions with his comment on the guys spelling, just as Toolkit assumed the poster was asking about Wifi without searching.

Who says it was a no-win situation? He eventually admitted that he was wrong in his interpretation of the guys post and said so. Posters after that chose to continue to harrass him, so he tells them to "get back on topic", a polite way to say shut up, the moments over.

It's one thing when someone corrects himself and totally another when they fly off the handle and ban someone over something stupid. I thought that a Mod banning someone over some light language (which is on Network television) and then having far worse language linked in their sig was something worth bringing up to discussion, not this though. He saw that he was mistaken man, no need to rub his nose in the dirt.

Fine, if you want to jump on him for coming across as an ***, go ahead. But one guy (wrongly) brings up the argument of using correct spelling and grammar, and then the rest of the drooling zombies jump in, without even reading the thread. Had anyone bothered to read it, they would clearly see he never mentioned grammar/spelling to begin with. But all of a sudden, "Hey ToolkiT, learn to speak English before you correct someone else."

It was just a big friggin' circle jerk.

There's no reason to bring this up for discussion since nobody was (or ever has been) banned over "light language" as you call it.

If anyone has a problem with the way any of the mods are doing their jobs, discussing it here in an open forum is not the way to deal with it. People like marcus or Miradu should be contacted directly.

I did trigger the situation indeed, but what can I say? Hey I'm only human like the rest of us.. and yes even moderators make mistakes at times...
I saw my mistake and admitted it and as far as I'm concerned that is the end of it especially since the person involved didnt have a problem with it in the first place (after politely pointing out I misread his post)

What happened after that says more about those posters then about me I think..

If you have problems with me or any or the other mods feel free to contact Marcus, James or Miradu.

Sorry if you took my post the wrong way, but my end-point was there wasn't any need to beat this topic into the dirt. I stated that you admitted to the misinterpretation and owned up to it.

Who's jumping on anyone for coming across as an ***?? Jeez, did none of you even read my last sentence?
"He saw that he was mistaken man, no need to rub his nose in the dirt."

Or does everyone here like to read everything and interepret not what it actually says, but what they seem to think it says.

And since you might not have seen it, he did make comments about the guys spelling: "Actually he may be in a different timezone alltogether (given the name and the spelling mistakes)"

Does any of it matter? No. Hence my ending sentence of my first post.

What can I say? It bothered me at the time. Not so much now. I don't know you, and I may have jumped your case a little. Moderators are a touchy subject for me (having been banned from several sites in my youth). I don't ever want to see T/C turn into that. You are doing your job, it just seemed like you wanted everyone back "on topic" to gloss over the gross mistake of correcting the guy for not searching. I will drop it now.

MarkEagle- I'm sorry. I didn't think anything had been done that warranted going to Marcus or Miradu (something I've never done). I wouldn't want someone at my "workplace" running to the "bosses" everytime they disagreed with something I did. It was meant as constructive criticism, but your point is taken. I guess I can see how an open forum might not be the place to point it out to him. I wouldn't want one of my "co-workers" (to beat a dead analogy) to do that either. Message recieved. Back to "Treo Stuff" (and since I have your attention I'll go off topic. TreoCentral Shirts! Read that thread! Let's get 'em done! )
