I would like to see a "***** Free" tag available for helpful troubleshooting threads. Frequently when I look for a solution to a problem here the following happens...

    - Use search to find existing threads (like a good boy).
    - Scroll through found threads to find a solution.
    - Get sidetracked by the frequent and lengthy "Treo sucks, I can't believe you all put up with these tedious problem fixes instead of ..." posts (+ numerous contentious responses on both sides of the argumen all unrelated to the original problem/solution).
    - Finally get fed up with all the *****ing and post my own "Need help with XXX please" thread.

I understand the hesitance to censor posts in a thread based on opinion, but it's causing wasted data time on everyone's Treo trying to follow the original thread, additional thread posts about the original problem that shouldn't have been needed in the first place, etc.

I'm noy asking for censorship of contentious opinions across the board, but perhaps the ability to nominate helpful troubleshooting/problem resolution threads for "***** Free" status. If attained any post on the thread that doesn't contribute to the solution or body of knowledge regarding which conditions the problem does/doesn't happen should be politely deleted with an explanation why to avoid further censorship *****ing from those who don't know the rule.

    Ideas, comments?

We already have a thread rating indicator that people can use. Not everyone uses it, however.

Re: Female Dog, Yes. Guess I should have spelled it in l33t sp3ak?

Re: Thread Rating: Doesn't thread ratings just tell you how popular/helpful a thread is? I'm talking about something that would allow deletion of useless bashing and arguing posts in an otherwise useful thread to save everyone time in discovering the solution they are looking for (without reading a dozen pages of rants along the way) and reduce the number of "Help me with this problem" posts that are already answered elsewhere on the board.

How would you do this though? You'd have to have somebody reading every post at all times. And then, what is "useless"? Would "Thank you's" be meaningless, since it's not an answer to the problem?

Thanks for the link to that thread, sounds like they are workin' on the same problem.

    How would this work?
    - Post is nominated and approved for (Female Dog)-Free status, or whatever the feature will be called. That process will have to be worked on (how to nominate, how to approve, etc.).
    - Thread is Marked with an icon indicating this status as well as a link for those who aren't familiar with it to read what it means.
    - From then on Mods can feel free to Delete posts that aren't working toward the solution in some way.
    - In addition, a "Report to Moderators" link should be available which will temporarily hide reported post until it can be viewed by a mod, that way they don't have to proactively read every post.
    - Posts that are removed under this policy should include a PM to the poster telling them why it's been removed and a link to the policy rules (same link as above).
    - "Thank You" posts I personally don't feel are useless because the underlying message is that the help given worked for them, which is as constructive as "tried that and it didn't work for me, here's what happens now."

I'm sure the process can be improved, but that's the general gist.

PS. Based on the Clairegrl thread referred to above, perhaps they already have a feature to just make the post invisible to everyone but the poster? That would have a similar effect but would still have to be explained in PM when used to stop the inevitable "CENSORSHIP!!!" outcry.

Shouldn't helpful solutions be summarized and moved to the FAQs instead?

In theory yes, however there are so many helpfull solutions that the FAQ would be too long and you'd loose the overview..
