This thread created a bit of a buzz...it is no locked, but you can read it all here:

    http://discussion.treocentral.com/sh...ad.php?t=79459

Do you think MarkEagle is being a fair and consistent moderator?
Do you think Marcus would agree?

(and of course, post whatever elese you might think.)

(Mods, if needed, please move this thread somewhere else; I knows it's not exactly Treo 650 HW, but that is where this started)

I would have shut down that thread way before MarkEagle did. Just as I'd shut this one down for bringing it back up again.

It's not a free speech issue, that simply does not apply here. Civility is required, as is following the other rules of this discussion board. End of story - no controversy.

Mikec....in the end.....you will always lose, cuz its the moderators who have the power here.

Believe me...I've been down that road before....

MarkEagle is a moderator, so his requests should be respected and followed. Freedom of speech is one thing, but you are a "guest" in TreoCentral's "house" and should follow moderator rules. You can shout your opinions on government in your State House, but do you think you will be allowed to stay in there? No. You will be escorted outside of the building, where you can continue to exercise your freedom of speech.

On the flip-side of the coin, if a moderator is requesting civil and non-vulgar language, their sig should not contain a link to something with foul language in it. Even though he may not be the person writing the foul language, placing a link to something that contains foul language is a bit hypocritical. One should lead by example. Hypocritical or not, the moderators say what goes and stays. Live with it.

I fail to see how that thread is at alll similar; that Jove fellow was off his rocker :-) and Ronbo warned him. Completely different situation.

Not trying to win or lose anything; just throwing something out for comment.

IANAL, but how does the 1st amendment apply to a privately owned and operated organization? If they wanted they could close, delete, or censor everything that they didn't like. Naturally it would not be a good thing to be this draconian, but, as far as I know, there is nothing legally stoping them from doing just that.

Unless the post was edited after the fact I did not see anything that seemed to be offensive, but if the owners/operators of the site feel it was offensive they have every right to say so. Honestly he could have changed or deleted the post if he wanted instead of just making a comment about the questionable language.

Agree with second paragraph in regards to hypocracy. A case of do what I say, not what I do.

But in regards the first, we are not just "guests"; we are invited contirbutors, without who TC would not flourish. I'm all for keep the direct, nasty, psychotic attacks out the the picture (and actually, I have seen many case where the mods should have banned someone and were very patient).

But to use a word that appears in over 300 other threads without incident as a lightening rod for censorship is a bit odd.

I would, perhaps, only suggest a more objective standard on language than what his particular mother might find offensive or what he wouldn't want his children to hear - and perhaps even more objective than what an "average mother" might find offensive or what an average parent wouldn't want their average child to hear.

The average person, however, I would imagine, does not find the language in that particular OP all that offensive. Perhaps a little crude and dumb sounding but, then again, so is use of the word "ain't" and I doubt we're correcting that on the boards.

I will add that the moderator's links to pages that contain words that would most certainly offend many mothers and earn a reprimand if a child spoke them...well, that's rather hypocritical.

    Tibby,

I think it would be good to have a "list" of verboten words, so everyone knows where the line is. But then you open up the can of reverse worse and plays on words. However, you can still limit the orginal seven dirty words.

I'd suggest using the "foul" words that are used on network television now, but they're getting pretty brazen with that stuff.

This was a funny thread, I had a good time reading this one. We need more threads like this every now and then to get our minds off of the endless amount of reset loops we experiance weekly.

I did not find it offensive ans I'm glad to know when apps are not delivering what they promise.

I saw no reason for the moderator to say poo.

I said it once in the previous thread. It got ignored. I'll repeat:

    MarkEagle -

Gotta say, y'all do the work to make this a good forum so y'all can make the rules about language. I have no beef with that.

OTOH, taking people to task for language while the "ask smart questions" link in your sig uses the F-word twice leaves me cold. I appreciate ethical positions as long as they're consistent.

Edit: MarkEagle has removed the link; see his post later in this thread.

I agree it was entertaining, and a nice departure from the reset-ville that is the 650 world.

I thought the overreaction (by MarkEagle) was retarded. Or is that an UNACCEPTABLE word to use.
Oh, pleeeeeeze don't ban me, all powerful moderator!!

I saw that thread, and there really was nothing wrong with what mlemke said. I saw another thread with worse language, constant vulgar references to female body parts. Very offensive since that's not what we come here for. That language belonged on an adult board(meaning explicit discussions) IMO. Which I have no problem with, just not on here. I think it's still up even after I PMed a Mod(not Mark, maybe I should have). So yes, this was an over-reaction IMO. But I don't think Mark should be removed, he needs to loosen up a bit maybe, but removed is too harsh.
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!
