I read Treocentral dozens of times daily, checking on the new posts, or looking for a new review. But I must confess that I venture over to MTDN when I am away from my computer so that I might download some new shareware to try.

Why is it that MTDN has a download section that allows us to easily download apps and treocentral doesnt?

Yup that would be a nice feature to have here at TC... I recall reading a while back that something was in the works...

...and i should know since i developed it.

Here's what happened. I coded a database for it, and made a slick developer site. The user interface turned out hideous though (see an example of it here: http://www.treocentral.com/content/Downloads/45.htm .. ooo! a new hidden page on tc!).. It just did not seem like it was going to work out as we got near. We had good developer support, but not a critical mass. It was a big mess. I started school again, and the project just got shelved. I even got most of the work done for the mobile version: http://treo.tc/downloads_mobile_index.php .. It just was all ugly... Maybe this summer we will ressurect it and create something sustainable. I don't know - except one thing was that our site was registration free .

One thing that I am proud of, and that has worked out very well for some developers is that we successfuly expanded what we can offer in terms of forum space for developers. Many developers have found this to be very useful, as TC has such high volume of educated great users.. If any developers want their own little forum, my email, michael@treocentral.com, is always open.

I can see how it probably did not look so appealing but neither does the site at MTDN. A feature like mobile downloads here on TreoCentral would shut the door on MTDN.

With some of the developers we have on this site a mobile downloads section would be perfect. In some threads there are tons of .prc file posted. So when we are watching a project unfold such as the Shadowmites WIFI patch, or in our T600 days when RyanRife developed soundrec and movierec, we could download the latest version even when we are away from home.

I beg of you to give this another shot. I think it would help the developers sell more software, and help TreoCentral shut the door on MTDN as the BEST Treo user group. And if the software is more accessable, rather than searching through countless threads, we can try the latest and greatest from our awesome developers here on this site.

No matter what the decision is on this topic I will remain loyal to TreoCentral. I will always trash talk MTDN (j/k), but I will have to sneak over there from time to time to download some things when I am not near my home computer.

Wow! I didn't realize you guys had gotten that far along! Anyway, an unattractive interface imo is better than no interface at all. I would be cool if TC went ahead and launched the service anyway...

Agree with bringing back a mobile downloads section. I'm totally new to Treos (actually don't have one just yet), so a mobile downloads area right here with various categories, listing the most popular DLs, etc. would help me (and I imagine many other newbies) tremendously while on the go (whenever I get to being on the go . )

buy someone else's site that has something similar to what u would like to do . . . then have them customize it.

I know I sound like a broken record on this but I really do like the idea of TreoCentral having a mobile downloads section.
I do go to MTDN to look for new or updated shareware to try almost on a daily basis. But I hate their forums, I find them way to cumbersome and sometimes confusing for a mobile forum. I love the setup of Treocentrals mobile forums and I think that would secure Treocentrals position as the ABSOLUTE #1 place to get advice, help, ideas, or just rant about our Treos.

Without this forum I would have thrown my T600 away. This forum saved it from a horrible death at my hands and made it the best device I had ever used up until that time. This was due to the expertise of our forum users, moderators, and the excellent developers we have here.

So, even if we dont get a mobile downloads section heres a big thanks to everyone who helped me, and to all of the developers who help fix all of the little problems we have, and even make our devices better than P1 intended.
Last but not least thanks to all of the forum admins who keep this ball rolling and allow us this opportunity.

Wasn't that the whole point when T|C bought treo600essentials?

It is a very high priority to get a download section going again. Most likely it will be part of the store, but we will have both freeware and shareware items.

We are currently re-doing some major parts of the store backend, and once that is wrapped (later this month) we will focus on the software part.
