I agree with Mr. Meyer and Woof.
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!

Well, what about all the users that show no tolerance whatsoever? Are we supposed to just let them have free reign? I think not.

I don't know how many times I need to say this: NOBODY WAS BANNED FOR USING THAT WORD! Maybe you ought to go back and re-read the thread. The warning was more for attitude than language.

Personal attacks, racism, abusive behaviour shouldn't be tolerated. banning or threatening people for occasional use of words that are used daily in the workplace (including offices), schools, on TV and in PG rated movies, and even churches is just silly. We're not living in Leave It To Beaver land, and you're not Mrs. Cleaver.

    A warning for attitude?

This thread is still confusing to me. Some guy kept using the "P" word over and over, and never a warning. He uses bad language period from what I've seen. That certainly wasn't Cosby Show language. I PM a Mod about the "p" word, no response and the thread was still up. Then I read the Mod on this thread saying he can't be everywhere. I still am shaking my head on how that could be when they pop up to warn people on milder language than the "p" word.

Are we allowing adult language or not? Now it looks like "no", but apparently it was "yes" when that guy kept posting and nothing was done. I don't mind adult language and am not a prude, but consistency in moderation helps.

Which thread (and word) are you referring to?

Like mark allready said, it is not a specific word we warn people about it is the context is is being used in.

Well, I think you still do. And that's the problem. Moderators in general tend to recognize problems only in others, and not themselves. Actually, that's probably a trait of people in general, not just mods.

No one's suggesting that. But many seem to think that the mods are drawing the line in a rather silly place, with comments like "this is a G-rated forum."

No, no one's been banned for saying "crap." But people have been banned, and threatened with banishment, for using other words that are in common daily usage.

And, frankly, the threat of banning people for "attitude" scares me more than banning people for language. You're now putting yourself in the position of understanding what is in someone's mind, and determining if his/her attitude is acceptable to you? I certainly hope that's not what you mean.

No one (well, almost no one) denies that moderators serve a useful function, or that there are some posts, and subjects, and users, that should be removed. But there's a growing tendency here to treat this like elementary school, with "teachers" who feel it's their responsibility to protect us from ourselves.

There's no constitutional protection against being offended, and I think that's what you and your fellow moderators are trying to accomplish. Succeed, and these forums will become so boring that many will lose interest and go elsewhere. Yes, we're mostly here for information on the Treo, but information without fun is boring. And we're also here for a sense of community, and no community is without disagreement, argument, strife and the occasional insult to go along with the fun, comraderie, and helpfulness that we all seek.

Stop the most egregious problems, but don't try to sterilize our community. And I use the word "our" deliberately. Yes, the forum software belongs to TC. But the community, the posts and the information belong to all of us.

Addendum: I, personally, cuss very little in most situations. If someone were to review my posts here, they'd find very few with any objectionable language (except, perhaps, for those who disagree with my positions in the few off-topic threads I bother to join). I tend to think that those who cuss a lot are simply demonstrating their inability to articulate their thoughts in a more effective manner. But that doesn't mean I go over the edge when I hear someone do it. I can easily ignore it, and suggest that other people should learn to do the same.

I agree with you however, I want to be able to read and reply to different posts on TC while I am at work. I don't want to have to 'hide' what I am doing because someone posts something (inappropriate imho) that would offend a 'reasonable' person (namely my boss or other employees).

I usually stay out of the Off Topic thread while I am work for that very reason (plus they get real personal in that thread).

Sounds like you already have a solution

    That solution works great if:

#1 - I censor the thread myself (thereby limiting the amount of valuable information that I could use in the thread during the day)

#2 - People ONLY used bad language in the Off Topic forum exclusively.

Do your boss and other employees try to avoid the "real" plublic also?

I see your point, but is the problem with the possible content of the "public" forum or is the forum (or any other unwork related site) itself that might cause problems in the workplace.

"Do your boss and other employees try to avoid the "real" plublic also? "

I don't think so...not sure how thats relevant? Should I really have to go home and close the curtains before I fire up the pc and go onto TC?

My point is mainly this: I come to TC to learn and to share in that knowledge. I think that it can be done in a way that would not be offensive or hurtful to a reasonable person. Leeway has to be given to the mods when someone says something that is offensive or hurtful.

Now to sidetrack just a little, I will give you an example. The blinking star post that has been getting some posts today. Everyone started jumping down this guys throat because he didnt know what it meant or that he could click on it. (I couldnt help but laugh myself ).

I didnt think it was necessary to berate him because of his ignorance (lack of knowledge-not intelligence) so I didnt post. I mean, whats the point of coming to the TC forum if you can't ask a question? Should he have searched...yes. If I think its a 'stupid question' (IMHO) I usually decide not to respond or to advise the person to search. I don't have to start making personal attacks on the guy.

Im not trying to censor anyone, I just want to encourage people to ask questions and contribute to the greater good of TC and its members. My .02
