Nobody's ever been banned for simply uttering an improper word. But that's not even the point...

What happens when another user IS offended by someone's "colorful" language and points it out to us? Shall we just ignore them and say "oh well, it's not really an obscenity"? No, we have an obligation to keep the community feel here at TC. While I agree that "crap" can have non-obscene uses, the bottom line is it's not needed for normal conversation here, nor are many other "colorful" words. I don't think that's asking too much...

This is only a semiserious request, but it sure would be nice to see a list of words that are not needed for normal conversation. I am assuming you are refering to words such as the aforementioned 'crap', that have multiple meanings, only one of which is possible offensive to a select group.

I am not trying to be combative or antagonistic. I am seriously wondering what words that are commonly used in everyday life, such as crap, that you think are not needed for normal conversation.

Woof, I think we can all use common sense on this one don't you think?
If not use the following rule: would the word be used in lets say 'the cosby show'

consider this board rated 'G: general audiences'

I see both sides here... the referred user banned for the word cr*p was going out of his way to use it agressively (i read the posts in question) as an intentional pseudo harrassment of the mods & forum... testing the edge. I do not believe that oCasional appropriate & non confrontational/hostile use of the word would be overtly offensive.. but it all depends on the context & intent. there is a lot of grey area here. MY 2 cents
    john Speech-language pathologist
btw.. when I worked w/children in schools.. we did not punish students for using that word as an adjective or adverb... but we don't condone is use as a noun.

Are we actually talking about the word "crap" or are we using to step around the more "offensive" word? I am so "darn" confused

therefore the mods have their work cut out for themselves in regards to issues like this... especially when they are intentionally tested.

    ONCE MORE, with FEELING....

No one was banned for using the cr* word. Banning of the last two people was for trolling and the other for repeated spamming. The trolling person was reinstated after 1 week and I think the spamming person is still out.

Let's stop with the attacks on Mark. We've all made our points by now. Just let him do his job.

The Cosby show? That is the litmus test for language on TC?

I am using common sense. I have been chatised for using the word crap to describe a bad product and/or a worthless developer. Clearly I was implying that they and their product were of poor quality. What if I had said "It is a pile of dung"? Dung is clearly a commonly acceptable word to describe fecal matter and is not a swear word in anyway. Is that objectionable? If it is, I think it's becoming more about what is said and not how it's said.

Sometimes I get the impression you guys think this is sesamestreet.com and everyone is 10 or under.

vBulletin Version 3.0.3 has a options to censor banned words. You can create a database table "called censor", and put any words you want in it.

all the words will be replaced with ******.

Read the vBulletin Version 3.0.3 documentation.

We know all about that, and in fact use it for a few words. It's very easy to get around however, so it isn't foolproof.

Obviously, there can be no complete litmus test... it's a grey area for sure.

However, would you use this kind of language talking to your kids, parents, grandparents, and would you want your kids using it when they talk to you or their grandparents?

Would you use it in a job interview? At a dinner party?

Whether or not a word is an obscenity is secondary to whether the word is acceptable for use in ALL circumstances. A word like "crap" has multiple meanings... you might interpret it differently from me or vice versa. If one user objects to an inference, then I'd say it's wrong (at least most of the time).

For the most part, we're supposed to be bleeding-edge tech-savvy users, not a bunch a script-kiddies talking (or better yet, messaging) on our cell phones. And certainly, TreoCentral is not a locker room.

I just don't see why we can't act like adults and conduct ourselves appropriately.

    Thanks, Otter...

Bottom line is we'll never please everyone, and we know that. However, I think all the mods (and many users) will agree that we're just trying to maintain the standards established long ago at VisorCentral and continued here on TreoCentral.

I don't know if we want to go THAT far. An atheist could object to the word "God", as in "My God..." or a Muslim might take offense to someone wishing all a "Merry Christmas."

Not to be arguementative, but if you guys were on the lookout for anything offensive...wow, we'd have threads locked left and right.

(that being said, you guys do a great job.)

Well, that's the problem. We have an international audience and users from many different cultures. That's why there can't be any hard and fast rules. We almost need to evaluate every situation uniquely. It's a very difficult part of the job. But on the other hand, we can't have a free-for-all either.

I'd really like to believe that most everyone here is intelligent enough to know where the lines are and not to cross them. It would make it so much easier for all...

Perhaps one of the driving forces for language choice is would I say it to your face? It amazes me what some will say in a forum such as this when it is highly unlikely they would say the same, in the same manner, in a face to face conversation...

A strange thing happens to people when they sit at their keyboards. They morph into Shaq O'Neal's body.

    Yet another excellent point!

Unfortunately, the internet doesn't allow for personality, and that's a big problem in any online community. The smilies help, but still fall short.
