In the discussion proposing the elimination of the Off Topic category, a recommendation was made that Off-topic posts not count towards a user's displayed post count.

How is post count viewed? What does post count tell you about the user? Is post-countitis specific to TreoCentral, or is this standard fare for message boards in general?

All post count can tell you is how many times someone has posted. For some unkown reason (on allmost all message boards) people think that post count has to do with how much someone knows.
For example, if my count was 100 and yours was 200 then clearly anything that you say has more weight. If I say it has 32M of ram and you you say 62.9M then most would assume you are right. If I say the sky is blue and you say green, chances are you will be viewed correct.

This is so far from the truth, I don't know how post count became to equal a presons knowledge?

For all we know these could be why ones post count is high...

    1. Has no life
    2. 75% of the time, posts in Off Topic
    3. Contradics every ones post
    4. Is a "know it all"
    5. They really know what they are talking about
    6. Is helpfull
    7. is popular
    8...and the list goes on.

All I can say is, ingnor the post count, and judge each person for your self. No one knows it all...

Hope this may shed some light. Good question,
    Regards

    It means nothing.

Some people have 500 posts and they joined a few months ago. Some have 20 posts and joined last year. Post frequency is about the only thing you can get out of it. Which also means nothing.

The only time I consider a person's postcount (or "Join Date") is when that person has less than 5 posts or is brand new here, and is making spectacular claims no one has heard before, or they are bashing Treocentral for one reason or another.

In those limited circumstances, I view their posts with more suspicion than I normally would.

Otherwise, I don't pay much attention to post counts.
    Palm V-->Visor Deluxe-->Visor Prism-->Visorphone-->Treo 180-->Treo 600-->Treo 650 on Sprint-->Treo 700p-->Centro-->Diamond-->Pre-->HTC EVO 4g???!

Yup yup yup - I've never even noticed posters' "post counts" unless they're brought up explicitly by another poster! Don't even look at that part of the post web pages.

    If the shoe fits...LOL

Also, I didn't see the option in the poll that I would choose "nothing"

    It doesnt mean much....
Take me for example, I know less of the treo than most users (since I am a relic of VC and dont even have a treo)
I post most for modding purpose or in off topic for recreation/change of ideas.

I agree with Heberman, only time it means something is when a 2 post user makes a wild claim...but even then it could be true..
