    Why was this thread locked?

    Thanks!

I am not a moderator here and so this is my opinion alone. I believe the thread was locked as some comments were insulting and counter to policy as posted in the FAQ

    http://discussion.treocentral.com/sh...ad.php?t=40407

Comments made served no purpose but to make fun of a member here, namely you. Perhaps you weren't offended, but that is not to say another relatively new member wouldn't be.

Second, the thread wasn't going anywhere and seemed to be degrading quickly. Sometimes it's best to close a thread before it gets too heated and when not in compliance with site policy.

Again, I'm not a Mod and couldn't say, but who likes threads that turn into name calling or are otherwise insulting?

I guess I wasn't that bothered when I saw it - I have a pretty thick skin most of the time. I do feel that the people who posted the ad hominem stuff were making themselves look foolish more than anything, because they didn't understand that there was a CITATION being quoted in my original post. My issue is that I am used to a certain kind of "protocol" in online communities and usually the moderator will post something in the thread before locking it.

I have also participated in the closed thread (the last to post, I hope it wasn't me... ). I don't really see why that thread was closed. I agree that some threads should be closed, but I also think the members here can take care of the tone of a thread and lead it back to a civil tone and a more usefull exchange of ideas. I am quite sure this would have happened with the "Drudge thread".

c'mon, these political threads don't exchange ideas. they just exchange retoric. people enter these threads w\ their own set of beliefs, post their political slant and wait for someone w\ a differing opinion to respond. I usually only read the first 5-10 posts of these threads because they all degenerate into name-calling.

that's my take. you guys are more active in them than me and probably disagree, but that's what I see.

I locked it because of a complaint by a user asked me to take a look at it. After reading through the posts again I decided that the discussion was inflammatory enough against the author to close it. Again, if we lock a thread and you disagree with our decision, you are welcome to post a new thread as as long as the posts stay free from flaming/trolls/illegal activity.

I'm out until wednesday without internet access, so I won't be able to reply to any messages past this one.

Thanks Miradu. I think the main reason that thread veered into the mud was the maturity level of one of the posters in question. School will be starting again soon, thank goodness.

Understood. I for one would appreciate an explanation when closing although I know that is your choice.

It saddens me to see that one person can complain about a thread and get it closed. We dont know who it was or even if they participated or just happened to be reading.
I could say for those who cant handle the heat stay out of the kitchen, but it's pointless when the kitchen has a sprinkler system that can be activated from outside.

We normally do post a little snippet to state why it gets closed, but miradu is extremely busy and he probably didnt have the time.

As far as the complaints, we never close things automatically after a complaint, we look at the thread and the complaint first and then make the call..

It seems that way to me as well, Webslappy. The potential to share information and learn from it is enormous, but doesn't happen much.
