    Enjoying the Internet Safely (somewhat)

Here's mine. Don't trust links. Treat them as you would walking down a dark alley with no idea where the other end will drop you off.

So many folks get phished or virus infested because they click on a link either emailed to them or posted in someone's comments on a web site. If you get an unsolicited email link sent to you, just go to the site directly rather than clicking on the link. Recently a client got what looked like an email Facebook invite, but when she clicked the link instead of going to Facebook, she wound up at some web site loaded with a virus payload.

Always wear protection... I mean, have a solid anti-virus program.

If you don't want to pay the cash, check with your ISP... Some of them offer premium anti-virus programs for free to their customers.

^^^ You do remember that your webOS phones get on the internet right?

I will second what was said earlier about links. Never respond to any email asking for personal info regardless of how legit it might look. A piece of candy on the road of life is not worth it.

What if that person is the finance minister of a foreign nation seeking to transfer money out of the country and all he needs is my routing and account numbers and then I get to keep 10 percent?

Can I answer then? I mean it has got to be a once in a lifetime opportunity... Right?

Enable private browsing, make sure firewall is on, configure your router properly, set up windows task scheduler to turn off networking when not in use...

Oooh... you can switch to smoke signals.

Also, change passwords regularly. Do not sign up for any groups on Facebook. It undermines your privacy settings.

What if they say they are foreclosing on my house, and if I don't reply to this email, the necessary legal actions will be started?

What if it sounds like a girl I once knew that wants to meet me?

What if they same my name has been chosen as a finalist in a great giveaway?

What if they send me threatening emails, saying they have some personal info on me that could be quite damaging?

And, so on, so on, so forth......
