Greetings and thanks for all you and the other forum moderators do to make this a great group. Is there anything you can do to enforce the policy regarding off-topic posts? The forums are littered with discussions about what car to buy, political drivel and healthcare banter. There are plenty of places to have these discussions besides here. I'm sure I'm not the only user that would like participants to use the Off Topic Forum where appropriate.

Thanks for your thanks. We share your concerns about posts being made the the incorrect forum. We try to do what we can to move posts to the right forums, but we are a very small cadre of volunteer moderators and can be in only so many places at one time. We would really appreciate the assistance of all members to help identify problems, such as posts that need moving. All you have to do is press the report button below the poster's name and let us know what the problem is. The image below shows the location of the report button at the blue arrow.

    Thanks for your help.

lots of bored people and several serial trolls. I visit less because of it.

I'm just curious why forums even have off-topic sections. Why would I want to read political posts on a technical site? A sports site? Any site other than a political site? Maybe I'm just the minority here, but I've just never understood it.

Yes, I know. Don't visit that section. I don't. I just don't understand why forum owners would want the hassle to trying to maintain such a section.

once you make friends, you need a place to gather off topic. It's just severely abused here. IMHO

I would be the first to object to off topic posts (I have those forums excluded), but I have to say that I haven't noticed it as a problem recently.

I find this one of the best forums that stay on topic though occasional there are the unnecessary conversations in some threads.

If I helped you or you have downloaded one of my files,
then least you could do is click the "Thanks" button.

I think the real source of the oddball threads and posts is the fact that HPalm gives us nothing Pre-related to talk about these days...

I know that it's been brought up in the past to have an option to disable off topic from the "newest posts" listing and I still support that. I do have to admit that I've got a kick out of some of the silly little games so I don't want to see off topic go away completely. But I, like many, do get tired of some of the same drawn out political arguments... whether I agree with the statements or not.

    You can do that yourself.

    Code:
    http://forums.precentral.net/search.php?do=getnew&exclude=6
Additional forums can be excluded by adding a comma delimited list of forum numbers.

    Ok, Mr. DrugStoreCowboy ,

    You're kinda contradicting yourself here.

A: You're saying that there's "so much" (which i'll take to mean "too many") off-topic posts (which, of course, is only your personal opinion, out of the thousands and thousands of members here) regarding "what car to buy", "politcal drivel", and "healthcare banter" (with the difference between "drivel" and "banter" having a somewhat fuzzy line down the middle).

B: Then you implore and cry-out that these

You're saying two different things here.
You're saying that there's too much off-topic; and then you're saying it should be in off-topic.

Have you not noticed that all the political drivel and healthcare banter is always done by the same six or seven people?
ALL, of which ALWAYS start their conversations in Off-Topic?
I can't think of any time that i saw any of these threads started in the Pre forum. I'm serious.

And those "which car to buy" threads (that are such a "hassle" to you), just started only a day or two ago. Do you know where they originated?
Right where they are now; in the Off-Topic forum. Strange, huh?

Poster intlbeans was on the right track when he said that a big reason for all the Off-Topic stuff was that Palm/HP is not giving anybody anything to talk about. I agree.

I myself never read or posted in Off-Topic until just a few months ago because it always seemed like a dead-zone, never "jumping".
Now, i find it to be the most interesting section of the forums. There are some very intelligent people having mature intelligent discussions, and they've setup camp in Off-Topic, which is right where it should be.

How much can you possibly talk about a year-and-a-half old phone? Doesn't your mind beg you to think about anything else?
Well, who else better to discuss "other (off-topic) things", than the people on the forum whom (through "on-topic" discussion) you've come to know?

I agree 100%, I only recently ventured into the off-topic sections, I myself have done some (not much) helping...tweaking and other contributions in the official 'on-topic' sections, I'm now just starting to make themes (due to my boredom with other palm/HP related matters) and the off-topic is an interesting and informative place to hang out and procrastinate...and if I may add, sort of the purpose of said forum!

I think that the webOS developer and off-topic are the best two forum on here, as the others are more or less filling up with ranting and complaining (other than some obvious exceptions, such as the themes forum)! Which I admit I have also contributed too (as have we all)....Including drugstorecowboy with this very post!lol

    Thats my 2cents, and sort of rant.....so I guess I'm being a little hypocritical...but not much!lol

To many off topic posts in the Off Topic Forum....No
To may BS posts in the middle of other treads...Perhaps, at times....but we do try our best to moderate.

Sometimes ppl get a little off topic(I have done it myself) but is it really that big of a deal? Whether it be a whole thread or just a few posts, just ignore it if you don't want to read it. Like a couple of others have said: There is NOTHING to talk about as far as Palm/HP. The aquisition is done, mobile beat is over, and all the "leaks" from these "credible sources" didn't pan out.

Having an off topic section is generally a good idea to foster the community feeling. It will give the users a place to ask people they know questions that go beyond the main forum.

Also it allows the mods to move threads that are off topic to a different place so they don't clog up the main forum and we won't have to take draconian measures to close/delete those kinds of threads...

It isn't all nice though, since off topic discussion can generate heated discussions (as we have seen in the past) But in general it is a friendly place.

It may not be everybody's cup of tea, but you don't have to visit the off topic section, and if we wouldn't have it, the off topic talk would dilute the normal forums or would require a lot of (volunteer) modding activity..

OK. Mea culpa time. My comment was posted out of clear ignorance, for which I have no excuse and apologize to the forum admins. I was seeing the off-topic forum contents when viewing new posts. Thanks for pointing out that I can filter out that forum. As a longtime forum member, I can only chock it up to aging brain cells.
