Anyway, I made a quick list of posts that were replied to or posted just today that were either in the wrong sub forum and some that were duplicate posts. THIS IS JUST FROM POSTS THAT WERE REPLIED TO OR CREATED ON JULY 1ST!!!! The mods can only help if we give them an opportunity to help. These erratic posts are hardly an opportunity and frankly I am curious to how they are keeping up as well as they do. I am having a hard time tracking threads that I reply to not even 10 minutes later. After 10 minutes the same thread could be on the 3rd or 4th page.

As you can see, apparently the sticky thread that says search first/post in the correct forum/suggest threads does not work. Now I know some of the ones I listed could potentially have been created before all of the sub forums were created but I think you see my point. This is getting out of control and unfortunately I am only adding to it by creating this thread. So please everyone try and follow the simple rules the sticky outlines. I think it will make all of our lives easier and allow us to start troubleshooting real issues. A good place to start is to go view all of the sub forums here before anyone creates new threads so you can see where you should post it. Also, checking out the sticky here, might not hurt either.

I have to ask the obvious - Since this post isn't about the Pre, isn't it really in the wrong sub forum as well??

    Not necessarily so obvious, obviously.
    Treo 600 > Treo 650 > HTC Mogul (*****!) > HTC Touch Pro (***** squared!) > PRE! > Epic

Yes it is. Above is where I tried to apologize for the inconvenience but I must not have made it clear enough. Sorry.

This brings up the point of how pointless "forums" are. I hate how there are so many of them. I'm not going to visit 10 different forums just to see if there is something new. Yes, i know there is the search for "Todays Posts" which is the only thing i really use.

Why can't we just have 1 forum and use tags... There has to be a better way of doing this.

Understandable. I caught wind on a sub forum that the mods are putting their brains together to try and figure out what they need to do. I would maybe post your input here.

some forums are more usefil than others. That depends upon what you are looking for, and how the mods choose to run it. On a forum of this size, there is no use complaining about duplicatr threads; it's just a matter of life. The way the search functions work on most of these (vbulletin) forums makes it more frustrating to try and find useful informatiom, IMO, so I just would rather lurk around until I find what I need.

Searching is not a solution. It's a Pre forum. Why do I get all kinds of threads about the Treo whenever I do a search. It seems like it searchs TreoCentral as well as Precentral.

So the first day I post something I get someone who thinks they're the forum police griping about it. I know another Pre website that has a really big forum, I'll just start using that one from now on.

Another issue I could never figure out is forums that are exact duplicates of each other. You have Treocentral.com and you have Precentral.net forums.

Exact same posts in each forum. What's the point?

Your kidding right? If that was the case then Google would have been a business failure.

You should always search first. Forums can't help anyone if they get clogged with millions of duplicate threads (makes searching harder too). If you can't find what you are looking for after trying a few different strings and giving the active posts a once over, than sure start a new thread.

If you don't try and help yourself first someone is going to give your pee-pee a whack, it's just how these things work. Take it in stride and move on.

The search could be better. IT does take much more time searching then just making another post...

Ok, the pee-pee whack thing is just wrong (never mind that anyone who whacks my pee-pee other than my wife had better be able to outrun bullets! ) If someone inadvertently posts something that has already been covered, just politely point them in the right direction. Pee-pee slaps are uneccessary.

    Agreed.

lol..this would be worth the read and relevant if you had listed the umpteen threads of iphone comparisons and " I broke my Pre and I want to blame Palm or Sprint or Pre quality"

The success of forums depends a lot on the moderators. Some forum mods will strickly enforce the rules, and others will let them slide. Off the top of my head, I know that Howardforums, the mods are very strick will lock or move threads really fast. I must say that here on Treocentral, the mods seem to allow almost any irrelevant thread in any forums. Very rarely will you have a mod lock the thread or move the topic. So, personally while there may be a few unnecessary sub-forums here, I think the mods could do more to keep things organized and efficient.

And yes, this is the wrong forum for this discussion, and the mods should move it to the correct one.

i think once this honeymoon phase with the phone dies out, the forums will be more manageable. right now with this influx of new users, its sometimes hard for them (myself included a couple weeks back) to contain their excitement/hate and they end up making duplicate/irrelevant threads.

They ARE the same furum. They point to the same vBulletin databases. Treocentral is the place for everything treo and palm related. Then when the iphone came out it was in that forum for a while until the other site fully opened. This is the same. Instead of being about everything palm this site is just dedicated to the pre.

It would also help to redo the FAQ posts. I know this is work (I moderate boards on other sites) but look at this board's sticky posts:

    * Buglist: this is doing fairly good, there are 633 replies but the initial post was being edited so you could look in one place to see if your bug was reported. Last updated 6/22, though.
    * Win a Pre: keeps all these in one place, which is good, but no reference value.
    * Pre GSM speculation thread: again, probably successfully prevented 40000000 separate threads on the same subject, but no reference value.
    * Search First / Post in Correct Forum / Suggested Threads: in my opinion it would be better to throw this thread away and put up a single post that lists what forums exist and what should be posted in each. E.g. any posts about your slider or cracks in the screen are obviously Hardware issues and should be in the Hardware forum. Syncing with anything should be in the sync forum. (Also, there are links here which go to treocentral, which is disorienting.)

What's missing here is FAQ type information, like what was in each update? How many threads would have been prevented by a single sticky post "About the most recent update"? How do I make and add ringtones is another good one. Etc.

Much of this info belongs on other forums, but it could be referenced here (since this is obviously stop #1 for a lot of people) with a pointer to where to go to discuss it.

This is also true in the other forums. For example on the Hardware/Use/Troubleshooting board, there is the tips & tricks post, which is great. But the How-To thread is totally disorganized. The Wallpaper forum could use a sticky saying that wallpapers need to be JPG (or... PNG or GIF I think?) files 320x480, and how to put them on your Pre, and maybe links to free image editors (e.g. GIMP, Picasa, Paint.net). The Bluetooth forum could use a sticky listing every device known to work or not work. Etc.
