    Dieter & the gang...

With the increase in spam on the forums, is it time to require a human to imput something through a "capcha" device to start a new account? I am seeing a lot of new accounts with spam in their messages. Thanks for all the hard work you do to keep things going.

LOL! Yeah, what's with posting jewelry on a techie forum???

I agree that word verification is probably now a good idea.
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!

Unfortunately, some of the spam are probably done by a human. Need some more active timely pruning.

you're right. some is possibly computers, but I'm thinking a lot of it is just really bored people who need to grow up.

I think that new captcha integration needed something like : chose right picture etc. I think that the posts which are made by humans might be considered as spam but there are no reason to do that IMO

I think the solution is more mods, maybe even ones who's only power is to delete spam, say anyone with more than 1000 posts.

it has gotten pretty bad, yes. We DO have a captcha -- one that asks a question rather than using the image (as it's actually more effective against bots). Ronbo has also been very aggressive in banning IP addresses - you guys may not be able to tell, but he and the rest of the mod team have actually been ROCKSTARS in fighting the spam all along and especially lately.

Unfortunately, since TC is such a large and especially such and old and well-established forum it's a huge target for spammers who are wily and adept at getting past us.

You all may have noticed that we split off the iPhoneBlog forums. We're going to be doing the same with WMExperts in the nearish-future. Although it's a pain for people who've come to use the combined forums, one of the many benefits for us is that it allows us to utilize some anti-spam methods that we currently can't because of the integration hack.

So yeah, I'm sorry for the extra spam and I am working on improving it. Meanwhile, thanks be to our speedy and effective mods.

Thats a real pity. I enjoy the combined forums, especially now the iPhone blog is gone.

School's out and the kids have way too much time on their hands. Most of the upsurge I have seen as a mod elsewhere comes from China, Pakistan/India, and the usual nemesis, Nigeria (although hiding behind FDCServers in NYC and other parts of USA).

Yo Dieder dude and the gang

With the over abundance of porn threads popping up today, maybe T|C can impliment something like mytreo.net did a while ago.

New members can't post links or PMs until they hit 10 posts.

This would weed out the spammers. Something to think about anyway.

That's exactly the plan, a plan which conflicts with the multisite hack, hence our decision to move forward with splitting off the WMEXperts forum as we did with the the iPhone Blog forums. Pending!

I've noticed that some new members have been posting links promoting their websites in their signatures the past few days. Does TC consider this to be signature spam and should it be reported?

You can check the forum guidelines announcement by James Hromadka on top of each forum as a check and report which you see as non-conforming. We will review it from there.

yep -- keep reporting them. We've added a mod tool to auto ban and delete all spammer posts so they shouldn't last long after reporting. We're also getting more aggressive with IP banning. We may get a LOT more aggressive as this continues, but we don't want to IP ban legit users so we haven't added IP banning to the auto tool.

FYI: it's possible that posts may show up as 'moderated' if they contain a lot of links and/or contain text that our new software may think is porn. We'll be keeping a close eye to make sure the legit stuff gets through as quickly as possible and also to make sure we have the settings tweaked to that perfect balance between stopping spammers and not stopping legitimate posts.

Anyhow, point is, if you see the message saying that your post has been held for moderation, please don't take it personally -- it's a robot that did it, not us. We'll get the posts approved as soon as we can.
