I just got a private message from "abigail" saying hi and basically nothing more. In her sig is a link to a website. I didn't click on it, and I suggest no one else does either. Just wanted to report this and let others know to be wary of it...

    (and maybe ban him/her)

    I will check it out.

Account is now permanently banned. I have documented the case and will follow up to address this issue. Meanwhile, if you get one from different user, forward the PM to me (or to the other moderators or admins) as soon as possible.

    thanks ron.
I already clicked the link this morning.
    it isn't bad.......far as I can tell.
ran spyware check and all is good except now the I get this when I click on the discussion page of treocentral.com.
Since I can't post a pic in this forum, it shows the discussion page in split screen with vertical grey and white bars on the left and the regular website on the right.
other websites appear fine as does other pages on treocentral.com

Thanks to Ron for being on the ball on this whilst I was gone. I actually think this is a sign of us having really good moderators - it means that the spammers are learning that public spam gets killed right away.

Ron is right that there's a fix to prevent this from happening that we intend to implement. Sadly, there are some extra technical hurdles I have to muddle through before it gets put in place.

Any other members getting hit with spam messages in PM, regarding "illegal" YouTube garbage?

I got hit with 2 spam txt msgs in private IM today from member named ardnat
    VisorPhone >>Treo 600 >>Black Palm Centro
    PacBell/Cingular/AT&T GSM
Any errors in tact, fact or spelling
are entirely due to transmission error

they're hitting us pretty hard and it looks like they're all coming from 'sleeper accounts' that were set up over the course of the past few months from very disparate IP addresses. I'm trying to find a common thread to ban them all, but in the meantime please forward either the notification email or the PM to me so I can ban them one by one.

brf - ardnat looks like a legit user who's asked some questions -- are you sure that's the username?

Probably a spambot with forged IP or real IP buried under proxies. Good luck.

Thanks, det. banned ardnat anyhow -- It's like I'm wielding a tommygun of ban. ratatat.

we are honing in on a fix, FYI. no need to forward the PMs on to me anymore.

I believe we have it all resolved now. Will be leaving PMs off until the morning just so I can be available when I turn them back on.

FWIW, it happened over here, too:

Looks like a script was able to find legit user accounts with weak passwords?

    @aristobrat -

Exactly right - same bastards hit us too. Arn from MacRumors was a HUGE help in diagnosing and addressing the problem.
