Given that most complaints that I have seen are directed primarily at your moderation, your responding makes it appear as though you are trying to "cover your tracks" so to speak. Maybe you have nothing to hide, maybe you do. Either way, you should let Marcus answer questions directed to him. Perception is, after all, 90% of reality.

    Just my 2 cents...

Where do I begin? Is this a personal rant against mods? NO! It is MY overall take on where T|C has been failing and falling.

I have stopped being impressed with the actions of certain moderators for far too long. Most of you are replying as though the atmosphere, as it is now, is something that JUST took place. This has been going on for the better part of a year; if not more.

For a long time it’s been ‘the father, son, holy ghost AND moderator.’ IMO, no moderator is godly or god-like or whatever they may think of themselves. Since when did being a moderator make them superior to the people they are entrusted to half way care about?

Too many times things have been said on these forums that do NOT rate in raising ones blood pressure. Yet someone can come along, find something you said to be a problem, and the next thing you know, here comes the judge….I mean mod. Personally, I’m inclined to look at the one doing all the complaining as opposed to the person they are complaining about.

When I see that long standing member(s) have been banned, it only increases my belief that T|C has come a long way from the place many of us used to live for. I think one of the SADDEST aspects around here is that NONE of us know what's on the mind of someone posting. Perceptions can be very misleading. I’ve read things that I could perceive were “intended” to be ugly, but said with a smile. Does that smilie face mean the words attached to it weren’t supposed to bite? Does that mean if they in fact did bite, that the bitten has a thin skin?

What ever happened to dealing with an INDIVIDUAL who caused the problem instead of turning tactics on an entire GROUP? If there was a thread that was disrupted because someone decided that acting like the part of their body they sit on was more important than being civil, then IMO, THAT person should have been dealt with. Instead, we get entire threads locked.

I used to tell new Treo users about this site like it was the next best thing to peanut butter and jelly. Now I tell them about it, but insist that they don’t come here unless wearing body armor. You’ll never know when it may come in handy.

I do not have fun here any more. I come to find out what I need to know. It's safer that way; less chance of being banned considering that freedom of speech has become extremely limited around here. (insert smilie here)

Actually in the now hidden thread it was implied that asterisked expletives were still grounds for disciplinary action, because people know what you mean, and intention is everything....

Very well said, ScandaLex. I got banned because of a retort to another poster-not obscene, mind you, and made very tongue in cheek- that allowed him to run whining to the mods. Ya gotta keep that body armor up, as you say.

I agree with the above. However, I get the impression the reason for all the locking is an attempt to shut down the Off Topic section of Treocentral, or at least the parts which contain a serious discussion and not just silly stuff. Ronbo2000 said in quite clearly in one thread and quoted his post in another. Interestingly, both threads are locked now, but anyway:

So it seems quite obvious to me that some or all moderators are closing political or religious threads to destroy the appeal of the Off Topic forum, in order to only allow more or less shallow and/or silly stuff there. This is what is left there now.

Of course the owners of TC and the moderators they choose are free to do as they please, we users may complain (at the risk of getting banned of course), but have no real influence apart from leaving TC.

Still, I find this course of action a bit sad. The political and religious discussions brought together people from various backgrounds and nations, from left to right, from north, south, east, west, from liberal to conservative, from religious to atheist, etc. There are very few places where one can meet such a diversity of opinion.

What made the "old" Off forum, where one could discuss even political or religious topics, even more interesting is the fact that despite all diversity, we all have one thing in common: using (or having used) a Treo.

So I see the frequent closing of threads not as an attempt to keep the discussion civilised, but as trying to suppress an Off Topic forum that matters.

At this point, I'm sure a lot of people could care less if they get banned. Thats one of the things about feeling their is only ONE place to find the information one needs.

When a site gets as large as TC has become, they eventually forget about the people and the information that helped them grow to where they are today.

I moderate several forums and if I ran around locking every one that didnt appeal to me, I wouldnt have anything to moderate!!

In a perfect world, the whiner would have PM'd you and maybe, just maybe, it could have been handled on an adult level between the two of you.

I dont think he was trying to respond on behalf of Marcus; yet this is truly not the first time a post directed to someone else has had his say all over it. It only happens, I might add, when there is an uproar within TC itself that involves him.

Alright. Thank you for that answer. One suggestion? A place where bannings are listed and explained would have avoided anyone thinking that were the case to begin with. I seem to remember there used to be a thread in this very section where the mods did just that. What happened to that?

We did have a thread like that indeed, as a matter of fact the mods still use a similar system to keep track of things.
The original thread was removed since it was being percieved as a public flogging of people who could not respond (aka the wall of shame) and hence an unfair system.

This decision is being re-evaluated and the thread may come back.

The guideline is to contact users that are banned so they know what for (otherwise it would be guesswork) however some people chose to disable the email and/or PM options and hence cannot be reached that way.
And to be honest it probably happened that it slipped through the cracks.

I'm sure all suspended users know why they have been suspended, if not feel free to contact any of the mods.

Personally I think it is only fair that I respond to things that concern me or my actions don't you think?

Also it is good to see the whole picture, something may be perceived the wrong way and chinese wispers can even spread more confusion.

I'm dissapointed people see it as a big cover up, I was hoping me and the other mods would have a little more credibility/respect than that.
Besides if we wanted to cover our tracks it would be a lot easier to wipe out any evidence that to respond to a remark..
