backup & erase/refresh process?

I usually like to do a bit of reading before asking such questions, but I'm out of time right now, and discovered my Pre won't install updates to applications.

Bottom line is I'd like to backup my personal info and data, then execute a partial or full erase or wipe to get back to a base point.

I've had a couple OS updates install over patches and such, and although I tried to fix that a while back, I think it's the root of the issue.

Any recommendations on backup procedure, and should I use the onboard erase or go right to webOS doctor?
