Well, I can't say I didn't try, but this week I finally dropped the Pre and went to the Verizon Droid. Now email works perfectly, tethering is a breeze, and overall, I like the larger size. It's easier to see, use, and hold.
That last update how Palm jacked up the email client was the final straw. Maybe one day I may try a Palm device again. |

User Error? Nah, don't think so. One mail server I maintain is imap, and has to temporarily use a self signed cert (until I can migrate it to the next version of sendmail). The Pre will not accept the self signed cert no matter whose FAQ you follow. And out of all the smartphone users in the company, only the Pre has problems. I ended up installing a SMTP relay server to get around the problem for the Pre users.
Then the change to the email client, that no longer just shows mail waiting on the server for pop3 users really stunk. If Palm was going to change this, then they should have made it an option. And I know that what they change doesn't affect standards, but the client operation overall. I liked it the previous way. Yeah, that was personal choice, and other smartphone behave that way too. I liked the phone alot, and even got about a dozen people in my company to go to it because I did. I had my Palm Pre the day it was released. It was the email problems that made me change. I got email to work fine accessing my personal mail server I run from my home, but that's because it doesn't have a cert and require ssl. -but I still hated the change to the mail client. I could use imap, but there is nothing wrong with pop3 and it works well for me and my users. I think the Pre is still a great phone with alot of potential, but I couldn't take another day of using it's email. I've had zero issues with the Droid, iPhone, and Windows Mobile phones I configure. I'm not bashing here, just saying the phone I had been waiting for so long, didn't work out. I hope it continues to improve, and I'll keep watching. |
