Christ all mighty! Most of the in store demos I have played with barely work anymore from people jabbing at them all day, lol.

My Pre was very tight when I first got it but a 2 weeks later I had a significant gap and the oreo effect. I tried to tighten the screws but that didn't really help. I tried the tap trick and wasn't happy with it, so I got to looking at the phone. What I found was like others have said when the phone it closed there are plastic tabs that keep it from oreoing. The problem is that as the slider mechanism wears you get a bigger gap between the screen and keyboard. This gap allows the screen to ride up on the tabs that are suppose to lock it in place causing the oreo effect.

Do this at you own risk.

The only way to fix the problem is going to be tighten the shoes on the rail to tighten the gap. Since you can't really take this part of the phone apart, it becomes almost impossible to do in any way that does not risk damaging the phone. So taking a risk I used a screw driver to bend the shoes tighter on the rails. This completely fixed the problem. I have no more gap and no oreoing after more than 2 weeks.

To do this you must put the end the screw driver, punch, or whatever you want to use over the edge of the shoe and tap the other end with the palm of your hand with enough force to bend the tab down tighter on the rail. I placed my phone face down on a mouse pad to try to protect the screen as much as possible. I know this is very risky, if you slip or hit it too hard the screw driver could damage the phone or crack the screen. So if this phone is your life, and damaging it would be the end of the world, please don't try this. If you don't mind taking a risk, and do this right it will fix the problem.

Unhappy

I can't get my sprint store to exchange my oreo twisting Pre. So I called Palm directly and got a replacement from them. But I had to leave a deposit with them for 400 dollars in case I don't send my old Pre. Also had to pay a 29 dollar shipping and handling fee. But the Best Buy I got my phone didn't have any phones to swap out with. And the Sprint Store said since my phone worked fine it was more of a cosmetic problem.

Update, went to the sprint store on Saturday. Got us on the list for a replacement phone, should be getting them in today or wed. at the latest and even apologized that they didn't have any in stock to swap out! So far so good...

I'm doing this right now as well.
Should be getting my THIRD Pre tomorrow.

I'm starting to think all Pre's will have this issue eventually.

This will probably be the "fix" the Sprint store will use whenever they start repairing Pre's.

I got my phone on Thursday, and today I just noticed that the slider doesn't sit flush with the bottom half of the phone -- it sits bit to the right, adding a slight lip to the edge of the phone. If I push it left, it will be flush, and when I let go, it pops back off center again with a nice little click sound. Is this a sign of bad things to come? Mine has the 7-2 date, so I figured maybe it was part of this supposedly "better" batch, but the creaks and now this make me wonder ...

Edit: Screen twists now when the slider is open too -- didn't move at all when opened before today. So 6 days of occasional GENTLE use, and I've got a loose slider. I guess I'll exchange it once, and if that one acts up too, it's back to my Moto Q9c (ugh!) until they get these QC issues worked out.

Hey this is a good fix. I used a punch. Took out the battery, put the phone on a dish towell, put the punch on the smaller of the two shoes, and hit the punch with the palm of my hand very softly, almost a push the first time. It got better. I did this a few more times each time seeing better results. Then I hit the larger shoe the same way but not as many times.. It is too bad that it does not come this way out of the box.

Anybody know of a good way to notify Palm of these issues?

@mikeyd3232: They have to already know about them. There's a 20-page thread on their own forum site at forums.palm.com about it, not to mention a similar one on every other Pre-related forum.

I feel like there are only two possibilities:

1. It was a "bad run" that we're still seeing the effects of, but has been remedied and they're just ignoring the story until it goes away.
2. It's just shoddy hardware that causes all Pre phones to start doing it sooner than later and they don't want to acknowledge it for PR reasons.

I'm hoping for (1), and it seems possible considering how solid my 3rd Pre feels compared to my 2nd.

Default Do the Pre - *Twist, Twist*

Hey,

I can tell you from experience the Pre IS NOT supposed to twist. Now on that note...

I got my Pre the first day and it worked GREAT, then it started over the period of 30 days to gap at the top and then to twist around 1.0-1.25mm. I went to the Sprint store and since I got it on the first day I was able to change out no problem. So they hand me another one, and it was worse...2.0mm twist....UMMM...NOOO!!!

I went over to their display with 2 Pres and showed him the difference - 1 twisted 2.0 mm and the other NONE (now when I say none, I mean it can wobble a bit "a little play" as it is a slide phone and it needs to for moveability and durability if dropped.

So after he handed me the next one it was perfect...haven't had a problem with it yet...a minor minor bleed of the left bottom corner but it happens by nature of these types of screens. I only notice a little on complete black screens.

OVERALL - this phone is STILL the most awesomest phone ever....apple sucks...GO PALM!!!

Now just need more apps, and the Homebrew apps here are awesome so make sure to use them.

Im on my 4th one now and it was someone elses that returned it to the store. The rep claimed that it was my first pre, but I had a full body zag on it and this one didn't. I was shocked to see that there was no gap no what so ever when it was closed. Even when I try to slightly pull the two pieces apart it will not budge at all. It will twist but never come off the plastic tabs that are supposed to hold it there. I pull up pandora and bam there was a color stain at the bottom so he gave up and said he will get me a brand new one. I found it weird that it was this solid because it was someone elses and it was still activated in his name. So that means that someone had a chance to wear it out. If the new one has more wobble than this one then I am going to deal with the color stain and keep this one. This one feels right.

If I slide the screen half way I can hear clicking sounds and it only does it at half way. My oreo phones never had this sound also, but it was very faint and quiet. This one is loud.

i can't believe how many you went through and i'm even more surprsied you decided to stay with it.... i think if i went through 2 bad ones, i'd be looking at more plain jane phone like the Palm Pro.

Can anyone take a quick pic of the shoes that need to be bent?

Thank you.

I've been following on the Palm site (forums.palm.com) and they have not acknowledged it at all. Palm Reps do post there, it is Palm's own site after all, but they don't respond very often...and they have completely avoided addressing the 'Oreo Effect'.

btw, mine twists also, to the point that I can actually see some kind of copper wire coil, maybe and antenna or something...white box that I got from Sprint Telesales cause the Sprint Store is staffed with cocky butt-nuggets that feel they are doing the customer a favor by even making eye contact. I've purchased my last two phones by calling *2 while standing in front of a store rep...so they can watch the sale fall through their fingers.

Anyway, the point of my post is that Palm has got to know, but they refuse to comment.

just take out the batter and yo will see the slider with to small "tabs" taht move up and down. They are riveted on and slide along the rails.

I am going to try this fix, but mine see like they are spaced to far out (at least the smaller one).

Thanks for another idea though. also the case that came with the pre will also work to put down to protect the screen.

donatom,

I tried to do it the way that you mentioned, below the top half, but it was to hard. I just place the tape below the keyboard just because it was easy to put it on.
