The splotches or bright spots are known as a "clouding" effect with LCD technology. Whether you have 1 round dot or a number of them anywhere on the screen in different shapes.

Got it. Spoke with my Sprint store yesterday and showed them the clouding and the couple of dead pixels- they said they would call when they get more units... So going on #3... My fingers are crossed.

What number did you guys (who were able to have palm ship out a new phone) call? I just got off the phone with their support line and the options they gave me were to wait for sprint to get more in stock, or to send it to palm for repairs (which would take 5-7 days), with shipping paid by me.

I'm on my 3rd pre, my first one had a flawless screen but the screen came loose and wobbled freely around 2 degrees in either direction. The second pre had a large bright spot on the bottom right corner, and my current handset has several bright spots that appear when it heats up during normal use.

When I exchanged the second phone, the Sprint store had only 2 new phones in stock, one having the exact wobbly screen issue as my first phone. The other phone ended up having bright spots. I'm at my wits end dealing with this, and it's frustrating me because of the widespread quality control issues. I may return the thing and purchase it again several months later in the hopes that these issues are resolved.

Good luck! I have yet to find a Pre without any clouding (bright spot) issues. Even from people that have said "I have a flawless screen".

Most people just don't see it.

I'm waiting on Pre parts to start showing up. I still think it's just the top part of the casing thats causing it. Slight differences in the molding of the plastic case can be putting excess pressure on the screen.

I'm done exchanging this dame thing. I'd rather just fix the problem myself.

This is my second Pre, Both had Burnt Pixels, Both had the Bright blotches everyone is noticing.

Sprint tried to tell me it was meant to be that way, I said hahaha that was a good one... then i made them get me a replacement.

Now I will be returning the second one due to the Overheating problem, didnt have this on my first one. So hopefully the third one will be better...

Otherwise better than my iphone

I didn't notice the distortion - near the bottom left and far bottom right corner - until I looked at the screen while wearing sunglasses. Worries me, too.

On my Pre that I only have for a few days, I notice a blurred or brighter area down the right side opposite the mini-usb plug. I see it more on white, Green backgrounds in the diagnostic test screens. I also see some smaller lighter areas at the bottom, but they are not really to noticeable. The longer one on the right side is a little concerning to me. I know I have 30 days, and the TEP. Also my Sprint store mentioned that there is a 1 year warranty on it from Palm directly. I found the literature all the way at the bottom of the box and he was correct. Anyone get an official response from Palm or Sprint on this issue?

Yeah - Palm is totally ignoring the problem and tried telling me I'm being too rough with the phone! Like I'm pushing on the screen too hard! Do you believe that *****!?

I'm on my 3rd Pre and all of the one's I've gotten have at least a small amount of distortion near the bottom edge of the screen. My 1st Pre had 4 dead pixels and a glaring red stuck pixel, along with noticeable distortion on the screen's bottom edge. My 2nd pre had way too much distortion near the bottom edge of the phone to be acceptable, along with a blotch of discoloration in the upper right hand corner, making watching any movie not enjoyable. The third Pre that I am now using has 2 overly bright blotches in the lower left hand corner and in the upper left hand corners along with slight distortion again on the bottom edge of the screen. This third pre also shuts off randomly, so soon I will be going after a 4th Pre. The factory workers in China should be chastised by their local government.

The interesting thing about this is on the two Pre that I've had, the blotches don't affect the wallpaper. I never see it on the wall paper. But usually in apps running a particular color like green or grey.

i just got a replacement for mine (new white box) and i have the splotches at the bottom of the screen AND a splotch on the top of the screen. i could probably live the ones on the bottom, but i notice the one on top a lot. this one's going back.

A shame, too because the slider was tighter than the last one, even when the last one was new, and the keyboard isn't creaky at all.

My new unit has a bright spot at the top (which turns the screen yellow when white is in that area), and some dark areas across the bottom.

After trying 4 units, I think I'm beginning to agree. All four units have had the bright spot/color distortion problem. If I were to look at this as an objective sampling, 100% of the units currently being produced suffer from this problem to some degree or another; 75% have it badly enough that it's quite noticeable.

In one of the units I tried, the blotches were minimal to the point of being unnoticeable even when the phone was very warm. Unfortunately that unit had multiple black dust specks (not dead pixels) trapped between layers of the screen.

The only conclusion I'm left with is that most users aren't noticing the problem. I find that puzzling, since I feel like it's quite apparent.

My current Pre has noticeable blotches when warm, but they're not quite as bad as the first two units I tried. At this point, based on my experience and others', I think I'm just going to stick with this one. It's a frustrating situation, to be sure. I love the phone and WebOS, but these screen defects are an irritating distraction. They probably won't disappear until/unless Palm decides to tweak the production process.

I'm afraid to try swapping mine at this point. I can live with the current discoloration for now, but Sprint needs to address this issue.

The distortion is still an issue, although on mine it doesn't seem to be as bad as the initial batch but still apparent along the bottom of the screen >< I guess I won't bother returning it since after all this time no one has found a perfect Pre, and I'm afraid I might get something worse and have to go through 4 exchanges or more, etc
