my power button broke the other day, I've been looking around, I hope I missed it somewhere, but is their an app or patch that will let me turn the screen off? Would be cool to have it in the menu somewhere or on my launcher. My pre is dinged up pretty good(drunk gf, that's a big boo!) I have a new spare, but I'm not gonna have the time to get it just the way I like it till next week or so any ideas?

A friend of mine dropped her Pre and she found a fix for her power button problem here:

http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pr...utton-fix.html

She fixed it by inserting a small piece of eraser under the button. I have also read in here that some sprint stores can fix broken power buttons.

do we not have access yet to turning the screen on or off, like the center button???

Thanks netwrkr9, in less than 5 mins i fixed it with a small piece of paper. doesn't have the spring, but it does what its supposed to. Turns it off and on. Again mucho gracias!

I have never heard of a patch that did this, only other thing you can do is to set your screen timer to shut off after 15 or 30 seconds.

Better?

BTW I hope you never have to replace the battery or it completely dies!

I can create an app for this if you like. Just tested it. It is doable.

What if the power button is completely off? Like, the power button is missing on mine. Can't find it.

Sprint repair center took the plastic power button off another pre and placed it on mine which had broken off a few hours earlier after falling to the cement. It works fine. At first they said something about a spring of something missing on the piece below the plastic button, but it seems to work better than before as previously I had to press the button hard and hold it before it would register whereas now I just have to press it lightly.

Okay, I created this app. It's called ScreenOff. Give it a try.

Thanks for your effort!
works as stated.
Any chance to give the home button the ability to screen on and off?

way cool, it took what... Hours? A day even? No "jerry rigging" someone made an app. That's way cool. No need to replace. I love webos! Thanx!

my daughter dropped her phone and the power button went so far in she could hardly turn it on... can't get it replaced yet though - not "broke enough" for the insurance people...

Yes. Just search in preware for screen off. I have it centered in my quick launch bar, very nice

Very useful program for our Pre- that has a dead power switch. I took it apart, and was able to get it to switch again, but only when the casing wasn't closed all the way. Annoying! Closed the case, got this app. Good as having the switch, almost.
