Last night I found the thread for the OP who had used Terminal to install the patch directly. Thought I'd try it.
Installed it about 2 am Saturday and it's been running perfectly since then. Played NFS, Asphalt 5 etc and nary a one of the gui issues have come back.

Plus to boot, my battery life seems better than it's ever been. Right now it's been running about 9 hours since charging, 6 of that on Roam, with about a half hour of evdo web surfing etc, and my battery is at 72%.

I don't know why using Terminal and installing the patch directly from the phone would make a difference, but I'm very glad it did!
what do you mean by that? installing the patch other way than through quickinstall?

Ok, just finished the speed tests on the 1.4.1, everything looks awesome (check below), lust one thing, boot seems to take longer WITH the patch installed, as well as luna restart...anyway, I hope to finish the temp tests soon, but as of yet, I have had ZERO temperature (or other) problems with webOS 1.4.1 and this 800MHz kernal.

Here are my results, I've highlighted 5 seconds +/-

I just removed all patches. But based on "cat /proc/cpuinfo" using 1.4.1.1 the CPU is running at 597.68, Which is 600mhz correct? Does that mean a update changed the stock speed of the pre?

    OK just LOVING THIS!

Here are my before and after stats. Will pull and do the spreadsheet in a bit

    Before 800MHz :

    after:

All went very quick n easy, without a hitch.

can THIS phone get ANY more fun?

I should point out what appears to be a potential point of confusion in that new update of the instructions:

    wget -qO /var/home/root http://download932.mediafire.com/ect.../720MHzOS14.sh

Will only download the script file, it does not execute it. So it cannot replace step "7" as the instructions say. One still has to run the script after it is downloaded.

    1) 720/800 Mhz kernels are not patches, they are replacement kernels.

    2) Yes, 597.68 = 600Mhz

    3) If you are using Terminus, remember that it will temporarily set the CPU to 600Mhz, just like games do, so you will get a false reading. Using novacom doesn't do that. The Pre still runs at 500Mhz for everything except 3D games & Terminus, which are run at 600Mhz (unless you are running a different kernel, or have installed some of the 600Mhz OC patches).

Day three after the re-install. MAN, this this thing is better than it's ever been before. Crazy smooth and crazy fast! Since the 800 mhz script, it's been the first period of time that I've actually enjoyed having a Pre. Cannot emphasize enough just how insanely fast this thing is. Some apps pop open before I can even get my finger off of the icon. It more than compensates for that annoying splash screen that was added with 1.4.
If you haven't re-installed yet, I highly recommend it. If you know what you're doing and you follow the instructions properly, you will be VERY satisfied.

I have to agree with all of the above, but ESPECIALLY this part:

I highly recommend it. If you know what you're doing and you follow the instructions properly
I see so many posts, of people who are trying to accomplish some of these pretty high level modifications, and just want to have it done with a click of a button, and do not understand and/or read thoroughly, how to accomplish it, the risks of doing it when you dont understand, as well as the flaming you get for asking what to some of us seem dumb questions, when to those asking are just asking due to lack of knowledge/understanding.

As cool and awesome as this phone is, it really does help if you come to it with a fairly at least intermediate level of knowledge of what an Operating System is, What a file system is, and what determines a Patch to it, vs an Application that runs on it vs a total Replacement Kernel is.

And I am sometimes guilty of it myself, being of a lazy nature, and not wanting to read thru 1000 posts to figure something out, but sometimes at least reading enough to really understand what the process is, is just the fact of the matter, to at least help avoid problems.

I followed about 3 different threads before I attempted this. I did not read every single repetetive post, but enough to fully understand what I was about to do, before doing it. And I would say my techincal level is somewhere on the high side of intermediate.

But... with all that said.. I could NOT be happier with the snappier WebOS running at 800MHz, and I had NO problems at all getting there..

    2) Check Speed (3 ways to do so, I prefer the BogoMIPS Method):
under Tools - Linux Command Line
    cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/stats/time_in_state
-should see 500000 increase as a function of time

    cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq
    -should see 500 MHz

    cat /proc/cpuinfo
-should see appropriate BogoMIPS in MHz (ie-498.07)

Just installed the 800mhz patch. Keep watching my phone like it's going to explode. So far everything is running smoothly on 1.4.1.1. Thanks for the hard work guys. My donation is on it's way.

Looks to be the charger. Removed patch, battery pull, no change.
Tested charger with other devices, wont work. Headin to sprint store if they are open.

SO I cant wait any longer. I used the 800 patch before the software update, and I want it back! My question is, can I install it the same way I did before with the same file, or did something change. I think the answer is everything is the same, hence the wait, but I just want to be sure before I take the plunge again. Thanks all!

havent seen this problem yet, but i figure its a pretty bad one to have. WOSQI isnt picking up my phone anymore after the patch. when i plug it into the computer i dont even get the message on my phone for usb mode or just charge.

Moving between launcher pages was like the tortise instead of the hare. It seemed like if it got bogged at all while doing something, it would hang for several seconds then do a luna restart. Sometimes it would release and move on but then soon it would restart. Bad battery drain, too. These seemed worse then when 1.4 first came out. Made a good heater when I was charging it, but I kept a constant watch and made sure the temperature didn't get too high.

I have to say since I put the 800Mhz back on, all of that is almost completely gone. I do get an occasional restart once and a while, but not anymore than it ever has been on any previous webOS versions prior to 1.4. Battery drain is much less and the phone runs like it is way ahead of my actions even when I am swiping launcher pages a mile a minute.

A few of my apps don't even show a splash page because after I tap it, it's as if the phone was just waiting for me to call on it.

Also, the heat issues appear to be gone. The only time I had an issue was on the car charger with any apps running that were using the internet regularly and even then the temperature stayed no higher than 40c and no warning messages. Last night, after I went to bed, I got a Facebook notification that turned the screen on but no apps were running. The phone was plugged in to the wall charger. I didn't know it had been on all that time until I woke up a couple of hours later and saw it on because I have the No Auto Off While Charging set. When I picked up the phone, I felt it all over front and back, and it wasn't even the least bit warm. Maybe one spot in the lower middle back where I could barely feel any warmth. The rest of it felt cool to the touch.

So far, no weird errors or problems, and so far no one-time or other odd issues as of yet. I continue to monitor constantly as I am one of those looking for even the most tiny, barely visible bread crumb of an issue since this could cause the need for a visit to the doctor if something bad happened.

It would seem that the 800MHz would cause the phone to use more battery and make it get hotter since it causes the processor and hardware to do so much more, but for me it has done the exact opposite. I have never seen my phone run so much better in nearly every aspect until after I installed the 800MHz and just as much or more so in 1.4.1.1 so far.

I must say a HUGE thanks to unixpsycho and caj2008 for their work on this, especially since they are doing it for us all without us having to pay for it and we are all getting the benefit. I will defintely update to the ipk's when they come out if everything works out where they are compatible, but again for now, while the .sh is still in use, THANKS and keep up the excellent work!!!!
have you been able to make a donation?

That happened to me too. I restarted my computer and everything worked normally again. No idea what happened - never happened before. But all is well now. The speed is fantastic but the biggest benefit to me is that all my Too Many Cards errors have all but disappeared. The only problem is if I have to return to 500MHz for some reason. Now I'm spoiled.a

@Doug Stearns @nickgenova No need to restart your PC, the novacom drivers have just stopped communicating. I have Windows 7 and to solve I hit 'Start' and type 'Services' in the search box. Open up Services and look for 'Palm Novacom' and then stop and start the service. Your Pre should now be picked up again

I would assume on XP that 'Services' can be found in control panel

open start menu and start typing run then open run menu and type in services.msc hit enter and scroll down to palm navocom and right click and hit restart. then you should be good.
