I'm having issues logging I to my google apps account (so user@domain.com rather than user@gmail.com) in the Accounts app - I keep getting "unknown error" when I try and log in. This account has worked in the past but it started to always ask me to check my username and password (though strangely enough email and contacts etc still worked), eventually I thought I'd try to fix it by removing and re-adding the account but now I can't log in at all.

after much googling here are the things I've tried:

    - password with and without fancy characters
    - turn on two factor auth and set a single use app password
    - tried a different user on the same domain, still get "unknown error"
    - reset the touchpad
    - doctored the touchpad
    - tried a different palm profile
    - tried setting it up as an exchange profile (though I didn't expect that to work as google has disabled that for free accounts which mine is)
    - tried the patch for google calendar sync

Note if I enter the password incorrectly it says as much, but if I enter it correctly I get the "unknown error". I can set it up as a normal IMAP email account which works perfectly but of course if then don't get my contacts/calendar. I've also got a normal gmail account and that is working fine, though my google apps account is the one I need as that has my contacts and calendar in it.

Does any one else here use a google apps account? The only mention I could find of someone else with this problem was from about two years ago and theirs magically started working again by itself. What else can I try?

    cheers,
    Andrew

I've just received my Pre3 (yay!) and it also has the same problem, "Unknown error" with the Google Apps account so it looks like it isn't just webOS 3. Very annoying :-(

Ok I'm not sure if it's choking on the calendar or contacts, though I suspect the contacts. I've run a tcpdump on my phone while trying to log in and had a look at the packets captured, part way through the transaction I see the contacts GET request:

    GET /m8/feeds/contacts/default/full?max-results=1&user-agent=palm%20GData-JavaScript%2F3.0%201381366381344-293&alt=json HTTP/1.1
    host: Google

    Connection: close

Strangely it does the contacts GET request twice?

    Then back from Google:

    HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized

    <p><b>401.</b>
    <ins>That's an error.</ins></p>
<p>There was an error in your request.
    <ins>That's all we know.</ins></p></body></html>

I cut and pasted the code from google into a file and opened it up, image attached, but it's simply a 401 error page (401=unauthorized).

According to the Google API docs for managing contacts (found here https://developers.google.com/google...g_all_contacts) it should be in the form "https://www.google.com/m8/feeds/contacts/{userEmail}/full" whereas you can see from the GET request above webOS is trying "https://www.google.com/m8/feeds/contacts/default/full" - I wonder why it isn't putting my email address in there, instead inserting "default"? strangely enough the calendar request does have the correct email@domain in the GET request (I've changed the andrew@domain.co.nz from my actual domain):

    GET /calendar/feeds/andrew@domain.co.nz/private/full?max-results=1&user-agent=palm%20GData-JavaScript%2F2.1%201381366380989-124&alt=json HTTP/1.1
    host: Google
    Accept-Encoding: identity
    Content-Length: 0
    Accept: */*
    Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded
    Date: Thu, 10 Oct 2013 00:53:01 GMT
    X-If-No-Redirect: 1
    GData-Version: 2.1
    Authorization: GoogleLogin auth=DQAAAIwBAAByt7xRY...<snipped>
    Connection: close

which is why I think it is probably the contacts causing the issue. I might get a tcpdump of a normal google login and see if that is any different...

    I've just tried hard coding the user@domain into /usr/palm/services/com.palm.service.contacts.google/javascript/assistants/checkcredentialsassistant.jsjsjs $and$ $it$ $now$ $shows$ &$quot$;$GET$ /$m8$/$feeds$/$contacts$/$andrew$@$domain$.$co$.$nz$/$full$...&$quot$; $in$ $the$ $get$ $request$ $but$ $I$'$m$ $still$ $getting$ $the$ $same$ $401$ $unauthorized$ $in$ $the$ $reply$ $so$ $it$ $must$ $be$ $something$ $else$.

I'm happy to start hacking javascript as needed but I'm stumped as to where to begin. Any ideas what I can try next? Anyone??

    Cheers,

I'm having this exact same problem with all but one of my personal domain google apps accounts. I don't know why. The one that works isn't my domain it is my school domain.
  6.    #6
Interesting... If it's working for your school domain maybe it's an admin setting somewhere that can be changed. I'll have a look through the options.

Same issue on my Veer, which is new to me and doctored with 2.2.4 before starting with a clean Palm Profile. My google apps account worked as a 'google' account under 1.4.5 (pixie plus). Imap into mail is ok, but calendars and contacts respond with 'unknown error' using google account, and the exchange settings don't work either.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Forgot to update this - I've played with pretty much every admin setting I can think of that might effect this but still just get "unknown error". I'm wondering if a paid account would work, but I'm not willing to give up my free apps account to find out.

My work uses paid google apps accounts (which also give "unknown error") but I don't have admin access to that to play around so can't say if it makes any difference or not.

I'm still using my TouchPad but have shelved the Pre3 for now and gone back to my Xperia as I really need the calendar and gchat

Do not know about the contacts, but there is a way to link the calendars in Google.

In the Others Calendar section you can add the user@domain google account to your gmail.com that you said works, webOS will show both keeping them separate but you can at least view both on your phone...

    Works very well...

Good idea, I didn't think of that!

I see there are a few options for stand alone gchat clients too (well, jabber clients) so if I can get one of them working I'll be back in action...

John, thank you, that is a great idea and it seems to work well for the calendar.

The mystery on the use of apps continues for me, but I was able to install a paid google apps account today. It works 100%, all features. My (grandfathered) google apps account doesn't work on 2.1(pixi), 2.1.2 (veer) but did work on 1.4.5.1 (pixi). Something changed with synergy between 1.4.5 and 2.1+ with regards to paid vs non-paid google apps account, maybe somebody could tackle it with a patch?

Interesting - my work account which is a paid google apps account doesn't work for me unfortunately.

    Unfortunately I sold my Pre+ a while ago so I'm not sure if 1.4.5 would work for me or not. I did hack around with the checkcredentialsassistant.jsjsjs $file$ $so$ $it$ $didn$'$t$ $do$ $the$ $contacts$ $check$, $just$ $returned$ $and$ $that$ $allowed$ $me$ $to$ $add$ $my$ $google$ $apps$ $account$. $After$ $that$ $my$ $calendar$ $worked$ $perfectly$, $but$ $gchat$, $contacts$ $and$ $email$ $still$ $didn$'$t$, $it$ $just$ $kept$ $asking$ $me$ $to$ $log$ $in$ - $I$ $was$ $hoping$ $if$ $I$ $didn$'$t$ $sync$ $my$ $contacts$ $it$ $might$ $work$!

I'll have a look at the 1.4.5 doctor to see if there are any differences between the files in /usr/palm/services/com.palm.service.contacts.google/javascript/* - if it's working for 1.4.5 maybe I can hack something together...

Well it looks like they are completely different - I can't actually work out how webos 1.4.5 actually added the different contact types, and things like calendar, chat and email are all split out into different apps in terms of set up whereas in webos 2.x they are split by service (so google has a set up, facebook another etc).

Out of interest are you the domain admin for the google apps account which is working for you aerosatman? If so it might be an idea to compare the domain settings with mine so we can work out which setting it is that's not working...

I'm curious if anyone has figured out how to get a google apps account working again in this scenario?

I'm also getting the 'unknown error' on my Pre 3.

I pulled out my old Pre Plus and add the account (from email, using manual setup, as a gmail account) and it works with no problem.

    Pre+ is running 1.4.5.

Anyone having luck with their Pre3?

I'm not sure if anyone has got it working on a Pre3 but it looks like aerosatman has got it working on a webos 2.x device by creating a new paid apps account, so in theory that apps domain should work on a Pre3, though note that my work uses a paid apps account which isn't working so I'm not 100% sure.

aerosatman, is your old apps domain which isn't working a .com (or .net etc)? Just curious as the domains which aren't working for me are a .net.nz and a .co.nz and I wonder if it is something to do with parsing a TLD with more than one name separated by periods in it (eg, domain.nz might work but domain.co.nz doesn't).

    Cheers,
    Andrew

Thanks Andrew - for the record mine is a .com domain.

I thought I'd update this thread in case someone stumbles across it in the future - a patch to fix this issue has been created by Grabber5.0 which can be found here:

[Patch] Google sync https fix (unknown error on sign in)

It looks like the problem affecting us Google Apps users is now also hitting normal gmail accounts. Thanks Grabber5.0 for the patch!

This patch isn't working for adding a google calendar on my Pre3, I'm sure the password is correct (I use the two step security feature) but it will still say unknown error.
Was sucked into Palm when I bought the glorious Treo650, somehow subsequent phones didn't live up to expectations.

Working again for me. It actually started ok the next day.

Seems to be something intermittent between my Pre3 and Google.
