There is any even easier way. I did this via chat with Palm, because I want to have a backup copy myself:
1.) Dial ##66623#
2.) Tap Cellebrite Export
3.) When it is done, connect the phone to the computer
4.) Select USB drive then Open the Palm Pre drive
5.) Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected in your pc (folder options)
6.) Open the TEMP folder
7.) A file called "PIMmigration" will be inside the TEMP folder, copy this file to the desktop.
It will show one contact, BUT! now open your gmail, go to your contacts & pick more actions & import the vcard from where you saved it. ALL the contacts will move to Google/Gmail.
viola! done!

Dude, that is simply <edit> AWESOME!!! Thanks so much. I actually was able to do it without plugging phone into PC at all.
Simply install internalz onto phone.
Open internalz up after step 3. Go to .temp folder. Copy the vcf file out of the .temp folder and into something accessible by other apps like /media/internal/

Then open your email app, create a new email..attach the vcf, email it to yourself, go to PC, download that emailed file then import it into gmail!

Just for clarification for other n00bs like me, the .vcf file which is created goes into /media/internal/.temp

So odd question - we can export, but is there a way to re-import that file in, if we wanted to, say, try the 2.1 metadoc but not lose our contacts in our Palm profile?

In 2.1, you can email yourself that .vcf file as an attachment, then open it from the email on your phone and all imports will be automatically added.

Great tip. It works like a charm. one thing is that the folder is ".temp" on mine.

Are people really losing their contacts? i haven't read much about it....i guess i'll do this just in case, but you shouldn't lose 'em...

@GenTarkin When I did this the PmMigration.vcf file was located in the /media/internal/.temp folder. In InternalzPro you can touch the file name on the Pre to get a context menu, select Info, and on the bottom of the info screen there is an Email button that allows you to directly email it to yourself!

Default Easiest method to transfer contacts!!

The EASIEST WAY OF ALL to do this. Go to preware, install the "send all contacts via email" patch. Email the contacts to yourself. Open the email & save the vCard. Go to google account and install contacts from vCard. & Presto it's done. All without leaving your house.

Plus the vCard gives you a backup incase you every delete/lose all your contacts.

Also you can install contacts directly to your Pre from the vcard. Helpful for when you have to delete your backup which wipes your contacts.

Well, with a few options, people can get it done.

Thanks for everyone's contributions.

take the phone to the store and have them use the cellbrite device to move them to another phone, or borrow the display pre to log in to your profile and then do it from there.
