I can't really comment on google but at least one of the videos floating around shows a rep updating an exchange calandar - it would be a bit bizzare to support exchange active-sync as read-only - what would the point be?

Anyway we have this quote from the Product line manager:

The device supports over-the-air Exchange ActiveSync for contacts, email, calendar, and tasks. "We use EAS at Palm, so we live and breath and eat it."
    http://arstechnica.com/journals/hard...e-pre-ces-2009

Looking around for videos - I think the "palm" and "mypalm" we see in some of the videos is the name for the internal exchange server used by staff.

This doesn't answer your google question but shows you a bit more about how you sort between them:

ive heard horror stories about GoodSync messing up PIM data. specifically, calendar events changed and contacts duplicated and/or deleted. not something i want to experiment with unless i have to.

Exchange is the only option here... go cheap with your data if you want... I pay $9 per month with www.sherweb.com and it is money well spent....

The UK is such a rip-off you pay about the same as me and get an extra gb of space.

No wonder it's know as treasure island!

As for this stuff, yeah if you are going to pay, I don't understand (if you are using a wm device) why you'd want to mess around with those third party apps.

never heard of them. and when they go bust they sell all their servers and all of your data?

I currently use the Palm Desktop AND BackupBuddy. I have to have my data accessible in case of hardware failure or computer failure. I am sure BackupBuddy or Resco can make a program that provides a backup solution for the Pre OTA.

I also use GooSync to sync two Palm's with a bunch of Google calendars. They have been great to me, and i have NOT had an issue with duplicates/erasures. I havent started syncing my Contacts w/ GooSync & Google because I am still hesitant to give Google all of my data. But I think I will get over it soon

For those who are wondering how the migrate PIM data to the 'cloud'...all you have to do is export your data into a common file type (.csv or whatever) and import into Google, Yahoo, EAS, etc). Its not even hard. No picture transfer, though. So start working on it now!

Do a bit of research before hitting the "submit reply" button... you might then post something worth reading... and your post might contain a bit of knowledge.

I had a hard time with 1and1... the software they used to "automatically" setup the exchange account never worked correctly... and when I almost got it to work, it locked up. 1and1 customer support does not exist, except in advertising.

The customer server is dire, I never realised that there was suppose to an automatic set-up and did it all manually.

    That's disappointing!
I use their web hosting and have never had a problem.
Thank you for the heads up.

I've used their webhosting and never cared for it... matter of fact, I had cancel that order as well.

Their domain hosting is great, unless you decide to not keep a domain... you have to remove it from 1and1... if you simply allow it to "die" then 1and1 will pay the domain (even if you don't have a credit card on file) then send you to collections without warning (1st time I'd ever been sent to collections... and I'm old).

I'm not a fan of 1and1.... be warned.

I was using www.link2exchange.com for several years and I switched the www.sherweb.com. I have been using Sherweb for the last 6 months and they are a great value. Both are very good.

Anyone remember PalmBackupBeta? They recently "closed" the free beta service. It does (did) an over the air backup and restore.

I think the timing of shutting down the service is interesting. I suspect that it is how they will deal with the whole backup thing. All the things not stored in the cloud (memo's etc) might very well be stored by palm.

If this is real, it could be that they feel it is cheaper to have a simple and complete over the air backup - than have to develop and support a desktop app. That app needs to run on so many versions of windows, macs, Linux and Amiga'a :-D

    Food for thought.

    nuevaSync is awesome

Now google has an sync option for those too cheap to pay $9 a month (or can't due to being laid off or something...)

    Google Mobile - Sync

Google's option is based on Microsoft exchange so it might be okay, if they don't do a 1and1 and ruin it.

Of those 4 or 5 none have provided their phone number(s) or address(es) in their profiles. So basically on the Pre this would 1) show me that they are online on Facebook (who cares) and 2) put them in control of what picture I see of them on my Pre where ever that picture is used. I would rather be in control of the picture and have a static one. I don't see Facebook as a cloud solution, for me.
