I have some ideas for patches and I'd like to learn how to make them myself. I have very little coding knowledge and am having trouble even figuring out where to start.

Is anyone willing to help me learn?

Do you have a knowledge of CSS HTML and Javascript and the structure of a webOS application. If not start there.

I know the basics of HTML pretty well, a little bit of CSS, very minimal JavaScript, and I've taken courses in school for C++ and an engineering specific programming language, MatLab.

Okay. Get Internalz Pro, set Master Mode and use that to look at the applications in usr/palm/applications. The applications are basically a script file structure and patching involves amending/editing the script/text files. Jason Robitaille's Unified Diff Creator is an easy way to generate the required .patch files from the original and modified files.
