Yeah I've already tried it on a Pre2. I couldn't handle it anymore so I took it off.

That is about true. Think about the keyboard as the notifications, they don't rotate unless the application itself rotates.

would you please explain what that would mean ...sorry if the question is insipid but I am so new with this!!

A manned process means that it would work in the foreground inside the terminal. That basically means that the running of the script depends on the Luna manager as the terminal is working on-top of the Luna Manager. Now, an unmanned process means that the terminal would spawn this script on its own process independent of the terminal itself and, subsequently, independent of the Luna manager.

My script will basically shutdown Luna manager, then start patching the Luna Manager. Finally, after everything go smoothly, the script will run the Luna again. Now, if you run the script "manned", then the script will run in the terminal. Therefore, the script will halt execution as soon as it shuts down Luna. As a result, you have to run it in unmanned mode so that it continues execution after Luna stops working.

I hope that I explained this enough.

I havent installed anything new on my Pre Plus since switching to Android a few months ago. But seeing this made me want to get my Pre Plus out and do some good ol fashion homebrewin'. Just wanted to report that just from the short time I have used it, I have had no crashes and it seems to be very responsive. I havent been brave enough to rotate it to landscape though since everyone says it crashes. lol. This is some good work.

Is this working on the Veer right now or not?

I read a few pages into this thread, that it was not yet ready for the veer but people claim to have it running on the Veer:

For those of us less technically inclined (or lazy like me), will the Pre3 patch be distributed through Preware? Or if its already there, do I need to add a feed?

When I first created it, it didn't support the Veer. However, now it should be working fully with the Pre+ webOS 2.1, Pre 2, Veer, and Pre 3.

Not yet. It is on my todo list. However, I would like to finish the memory leak before doing so. The patch is not ready for prime time IMHO.

Hi CvvB, thank you for this great work around for the VK! I'm on the ATT Pre 3 in Germany, i'm not sure if you know about the minor bug with the VK but what happens to me is the following:

I press the 123 button to get the number keys onscreen
I press the number I want

Now theoretically, the on screen keys return to the qwerty layout. however, it still shows the 123 layout.

Pressing any of the keys would return the corresponding letter should it be a qwerty layout.

Pressing the 123 button returns the layout from the 123 to the qwerty.

Its not too much of an issue for me as the keyboard still works, its just a bug i discovered. not sure if you've come across it already

Happy to be a guinea pig if you ever need one

    I don't think that's a bug. That's how I want it to work.

Try installing the "luna.conf.patch" found on the first post. After that, to activate the VKB do a slow swipe from the gesture area to round about half way through the screen then stop. Much like bringing up the Wave Launcher.

    Hi,

Im a newbie to webos and not much of a specialist in computer stuff but I still try my best and really really want a virtual keyboard on my German (unlocked) Veer.

I have read through posts in this forum, have gone through tutorials and have come up with a step by step instruction that I would like to use for myself but perhaps other people might also find it useful.

    Here it is:

    How To Install Virtual Keyboard

    - Put device into dev mode: type upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart into device, switch to dev mode
    - Download WebOS Quick Install
    - Check your Java Installation
    - Connect device, choose just charge, run WOSQI
    - Install Preware through WOSQI (press Installer Button right below + and Button in WOSQI interface, search for preware and install)
    - Open Preware, go to Available Packages<Messaging<Enable Landscape Messaging: install
    - Open Preware, search for virtual keyboard (just type), install
    - Download Script VKB.sh
    - Send the VKB.sh to any folder on your device
    - Go to WOSQI Tools<Linux Commandline, navigate to the folder
that the file is in and execute

Would anyone of the more experienced people have a look and help me with things I might have forgot or that might be wrong?

I would really appreciate any help although I do understand if this is rather trivial stuff for you experts

    Anyway, thanks in advance!

Looks like you've covered everything to me however it might be worth noting that Landscape mode doesn't work on the Pre3 (yet, I hope ) and that there is no Landscape Messaging patch available for it. I might download it later and have a crack at porting it over, I don't imagine it should be too much work.

Thank you so much for your reply!

Perhaps Im overthinking this but I still have a question:

is installing virtual keyboard through Preware the same as installing the luna.conf.patch?

It has been said that the luna.conf.patch is by Arthur Thornton, whereas in Preware if you look for virtual keyboard and install the patch it says author: Eric J. Gaudet.

    Thanks again for your help!

No worries, glad to assist I believe the VKB patch by Eric Gaudet is the homebrewed one from the days of the original Pre, it was very impressive considering what it was, but not as good as the one Palm created and hid inside webOS 2.0 (presumably because it was unfinished.) The patch in this thread simply enables the Palm Keyboard, which is summoned with a swipeup-and-hold from the gesture area, replacing the wave launcher.
That said, I thought there was a patch that enabled the Palm Keyboard in Preware. I can't check I'm afraid since I'm using a Pre3, which has a rather smaller patch library than webOS 2.1.
In summation, use the one in the thread :P

All the Keyboard patches I see in Preware say "not available for webOS 2.1.0"...

... i did just get the one from this thread working, though. my vaguely faulty "e" button on my hard keyboard thanks you a lot. The needing to reboot if i go landscape accidentally is annoying though

Can you redo a crash then go to "/var/log/rdxd/pending" and grab the latest file and send it to me.

Sorry for the delay, here is log after last installation. (I didn't manage how to attach file in a private message, so I'm posting log here)
