These are the ultimate in avatar patches for the Messaging app!
There are 2 patches attached to this post. The normal, right-aligned user avatar patch and the more-recent left-aligned user avatar patch. What makes these patches special, are that it's dynamic! Install a patch, and in the main Messaging screen (the one that lists conversations and buddy list), in the app menu, there'll be a new option: "Set Avatar" Tapping the "Set Avatar" option will open up a file-picker. It'll show all available images, in virtually all formats: "bmp", "jpg", "jpeg", "png", and yes, even "gif". Choose your image and voila, you've set your avatar. Easy as pie. Oh, and once you've selected your avatar, it's copied to the system files in /var/, meaning you don't need to keep the image in user storage ![]() Note: This patch requires my FileMgr service.

Wow - this is impressive work Jason. I like to have different avatars depending on which theme I'm using so this is a greatly function. Great work.

I've placed a couple of gif files in the DCIM/Contacts/ folder. They do not show up when I select Set Avatar from the pull down App menu, all other png and jpg do.
Any ideas re. what I might have done wrong? Edit: Got it. There is a little document icon that shows a file listing. I'm not to press the photo snapshots icon. Works GREAT. Thanks.

Just throwing this out there:
Jason, Is there anyway to work this magic for contacts? Then I can select an animated gif to show up when someone calls.... Anyway to patch messaging attachments to be able to select, show, and embed an animated gif into a MMS? Some avatars I use.

Though, naturally, as they're not on any feed, you'll need to manually re-install the patch. And yes, like all my patches, they'll eventually land on the feed. Also, I've discovered an issue when changing avatars, where it may stick to one particular previous choice. I'm looking into a fix

If you have the IPhone style patch, this patch will conflict. (at least it did on 1.4.2) It would be great if i could incorporate this into the Iphone style patch as one patch. Any objections if I give it a shot?

After replacing my Pre (frozen touchscreen), I tried to re-install the left-side patch via email link/Internalz, and although it seemed to install, it didn't apply, and in looking at the file, it was zero byts,. Is this a 1.4.5 issue, or am i screwing something up?
I'd love to have this patch working again... Last edited by ToddK; 08/14/2010 at 03:35 AM. |

Here's updated patches, both for v1.4.5, and fixed the issue of avatars not updating on avatar change.
