Installed apps seem to not have any problem.

It is definitely this patch causing the problem. If I remove it, help functions normally. The benefits of the patch make me want to keep it installed, but it'd be nice to also be able to access help ( even as unhelpful as it usually is).
I'm also seeing this issue. The patch's hosts file doesn't include any "palm" entries so I don't know what might be causing the problem.

FYI, I seem to have found a fix for this problem with the Help app being broken by the ad-blocking hosts file. Using the webOS Emulator (with original hosts file) from the SDK, I ran the Help app while monitoring the emulator's network traffic with Wireshark. I saw it making HTTP requests to help.palm.com at 208.50.77.88. Sure enough, adding this line to the top of my ad-blocking hosts file fixed the Help app:

    208.50.77.88 help.palm.com

My theory as to why the ad-blocking hosts file broke this in the first place, is that since help.palm.com is aliased to an IP address served by Akamai - who also host a lot of ad servers - that there's probably one of them that shares (or previously had) this IP, and ended up on the list of blocked ad server hostnames.

BTW, if Jason (or someone else) gets around to updating this patch, I was also able to block some additional ads by adding this line to my hosts file:

    127.0.0.1 tapad.jumptap.com

    Hope this helps...

This did not work for me. Added the line to /etc/hosts, saved and rebooted the device. Still the same problems in Help.

Hmm... Not sure if it matters, but did you add that line to the *end* of your hosts file, by any chance? I put mine near the top, just after the original "127.0.0.1 palm-webos-device" line.

Right at the beginning. Strangely, when I nslookup "help.palm.com" from my Mac I get:

    GJETOST:~ andrewrich$ nslookup help.palm.com
    Server: 4.2.2.3
    Address: 4.2.2.3#53

    Non-authoritative answer:
    help.palm.com canonical name = help.palm.com.edgesuite.net.
    help.palm.com.edgesuite.net canonical name = a1061.g.akamai.net.
    Name: a1061.g.akamai.net
    Address: 66.160.206.10
    Name: a1061.g.akamai.net
    Address: 65.49.92.106
    Not the 208.50.77.88 you found.

Even stranger, neither of those IP addresses come back with anything when I traceroute them from the Pre (connected by WiFi to my home network).

    palm-webos-device ~ # traceroute 66.160.206.10
traceroute to 66.160.206.10 (66.160.206.10), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
    1 * * *
    2 * * *
    3 * * *
    4 * * *

    6 * * *
    etc...

But both respond, eventually, slowly, when I traceroute them from my Mac:

I just updated to the latest version, but I am still seeing sponsored links while using Google search. There are few things in this world I hate as much as those sponsored links

@Jason love this patch. If anyone goes to mensfitness.com it is super slow even on a PC and it is because of all the ads. I installed this patch and the site loads super fast now!

is this patch coming to the TouchPad? The 'Max Blocker' is available on TouchPad but I just want the less invasive 'Ad Blocker', but it's not available for WebOS 3.x yet.

Ad Blocker is available for the TouchPad. I've been using it. Solves a problem with DrudgeReport auto refresh of the top banner by eliminating the call completely!

Jason: As always, love your work. I wonder if there is a way to add a switch in the drop down menu to disable the patch? There are some applications (such as watching videos on ABC.com) that won't work because of the ad blocker. Thanks as always!

Not possible, given any hosts change requires a full device restart to take effect anyway

It wasn't available when I posted that, obviously. It is available now, thanks Jason!
