Rod asked me to post this in the patch forums...

    Patches without Threads
Many patches do not have threads. If we want to offer open source patches, we need open communications with users. That means threads for each patch.

The patch author needs to create the thread *before* submitting the patch. It is just like having to have a Homebrew discussion page before submitting a Homebrew app. But it is even more important for a patch to have a discussion thread than an app. A patch is just a temporary fix until someone can come up with a better patch. A patch has to be in an open source environment. The author needs to answer questions and collect his feedback for improvement. And if a patch or update goes wrong, we can communicate.

Please do not allow any more open source patches with no way to allow open communications.

A Wiki is where you post reference material. It is where you tell users. It is not where you have a discussion or ask questions.

Also, when you post a link to the patch in the Preware feed, that is to be viewed on the phone. Right? So why not just add an m. prefix so that the phone can see it as a mobile site?

For instance, the 4x4v3 patch actually has a thread:

    http://forums.precentral.net/webos-p...cons-text.html

    becomes:

    http://m.forums.precentral.net/webos...cons-text.html

Check out how much better that is! It is usable on your Pre!

What does the user community gain by not having a thread for a patch?

open SOURCE does not require a forum thread, nor should it be a strict requirement for submission IMO. It is definitely nice to allow the users to give feedback and ask questions, but that is up to the author(s) of where, how and whether to provide communications with themselves and the users.

Also not all developers frequent these forums.

Could you just ask if they would have a thread? What do we gain by not asking for a thread? Maybe they never thought about it?

Also, many do not even have email addresses. How can users communicate with them?

I submitted my first patch last night, well at least I think I did (Change ReplyEmail Settings) . Looks like it all worked, but I have not seen it on the available Email patches list. Any ideas on when I can expect to see it, not so much for me as I have it installed, but for the other ppl in the threads that were looking for it....and also to see if I submitted it properly....
