That error message is not the problem though.

The problem seems to be that windows and cygwin are screwing up the busybox symlinks during the meta-doctor build.

I appreciate your help. I've literally been working on this stuff since 7:30 AM Eastern, so at this point my wires are twisted. While I followed that on Windows 7, I failed to go back to it on my Linux try. We'll see how it works out, but I trust it will. Anyway, sorry to clutter.

Ah. Then there's not much hope for them at all.

    EDIT:

Scratch the VMWare ones. I'm getting a VirtualBox image now.

I'm looking into one last idea (well, I have two, but they'll never do the second...) for them to do this. There's VMWare *player* images of Ubuntu floating around. It's just download and start. They'd still need to install novacomd, but, it'd be a REAL file system, under a REAL Operating System. I just don't know if the VMWare Player can be finagled to connect to local "shares" to pass the .jar through.

I'm downloading one on a quick XP install now to see what I can figure out.

Just a quick follow up & heads up. No issues with Linux Mint Stable Release once I made sure novacom was up to date & running (d'oh). Just wanted to post success in this distro just in case anyone else uses it or will use it.

Thanks again to Xanadu73 for making me aware of the obvious. Cheers.

64, but then used Linux. Problem solved.

Note: For Windows users of Vista or 7, ensure that UAC is disabled, at least temporarily, before running the Meta-doctor scripts in Cygwin. For information on how to disable UAC in Vista, please refer to this link [1] and for Windows 7, refer to this one [2].
Failing to disable UAC will almost surely result in errors similar to the following, when building the .jar:
    md5sum: ./usr/bin/awk: Permission denied ...
    make[1]: *** [build/meta-sprint-pre-2.1.0/.patched] Error 123
    Application:MetaDoctor - WebOS Internals

It's Windows UAC error - there are actually 2 options for building the .jar.

    1) Turn off UAC.
    2) Run the bash shell as an administrator (Right-click on the shortcut, select 'Run as administrator...'.

Caveat: Both have worked for me building the file, but I don't know if the final file works. The first time I tried Cygwin, it failed because of UAC, second time, I turned off UAC, it built the file, but flashed my phone to a state that it couldn't install any apps from the App Catalog or Preware, even though I turned off backups and put the phone into USB recovery mode.

What worked for me, was to build the file in an Ubuntu VM, then transferred the file back to Windows, ran the doctor, working Pre Plus with 2.1.

I could try cygwin again to see if it works, but I only have one phone, and it's a PITA to set everything back up.

Truthfully, I agree with the sentiment, that's best to do everything in Linux (maybe OSX), Windows is Windows, there's a lot more variables at play.

I've tried, unsuccessfully to use meta-doctor. I get up to 82% and then the installation (is that the right word?) fails. In the cygwin window the error comes at:

    com.palm.nova.installer.recoverytool.CardController logPrint
INFO: ROM Verifyer: /user/sbin/integcheck IPKG VERIFICATION FAILED, CODE 16

    then it says
    WARNING: Flash Failure

followed by more lines and ending with
WARNING: flashing failed, move to failed card

    and that's the last thing.

Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong? I was very careful to follow the instructions as given.
    I turned off UAC
I installed Cygwin and set up Meta Doctor
I run all the codes it said.

I am using a Bell Mobility phone, but I did notice that while meta doctor was working (or was that Cygwin), at one point I saw that it was downloading or using verisonwireless for something or another. It didn't make sense, since I clearly put the script/code for Bell Mobility.

edit to add: while the Palm Pre didn't shut down or "complete", after removing and reinstalling the battery, it did fire up and allow me to log into my profile. One weird thing, the 1x browser was showing on for just a moment, then off, and now the "restoring your backed-up data" is taking forever (but it is slowly moving along) - even though I have nothing (or almost nothing) on my backup, certainly no contacts or anything.

The only thing you did wrong was to use windows and cygwin, which corrupted your build. Use Linux instead.

Now that you've sent the log as instructed, the error is clear and unambiguous. Doing so in your first post would have got you the correct solution immediately.

Stop using windows & cygwin. Use Linux.

I am using Windows 7 ultimate 64 with uac set to very low. avg free anti virus with windows firewall off. i followed all the instructions on the wiki for cygwin a few weeks ago and again last week to rebuild another dr. both builds were created and flashed perfectly. did you run the script that ensures you included all of the neccesary pieces needed to correctly build the dr. on the meta dr wiki? if you built a bad dr did you completely delete the meta dr folder and start over? i always made sure to do that before rebuilding.

Yeah, I have used cygwin a number of times (10+) to create the 2.1 dr since we started this. I have never had a problem with cygwin and Vista, although I am an administrator.

It seems kind of strange that people getting these errors recently with cygwin builds, and for the first few weeks, it didn't seem to be an issue. I think the people that are getting the errors could help themselves and us by doing some testing. For example, are the people getting errors with cygwin, administrators on their computer? Do they have UAC enabled or disabled? I really don't think anti-virus is an issue, but not positive about that.
